rear axle using heat
hi, I took the axle from my 82 f150 to a shop to have the seal replaced they tried to press it off but it wouldn't budge, so they used heat. My repair book says to never use heat. I wondering why? Is there an online site with information about working on a 9 inch rear axle. thanks

Depending on who did it is safe to heat the bearing while trying to press it off. So long as you dont heat the axle shaft it self too much. I have on several occasions had to heat a bearing race to get it off. We use a 20 ton bearing press that would not budge the race. You heat slightly to cause the metal to expand allowing you to press it off. If the axle got too hot it will be weak and can have failure. Like I said if the mechanic knew what he was doing, it is safe.
