rejet a new carburetor??????

I have a overhauled 351w in a 70f100 thats not running quite right. It really never accelerates to the best of its ability. And when i bring the rpms up just above an idle it hesitates or sputters. i have replaced everything imaginable. soooo this mechanic told me to rejet my brand new edelbrock. He said it sounds like it is running to lean.
What do you think? Tony

One thing I forgot to do was when I put the motor in is that I didnt push my stall in and turn it until it made that slipping in connection.. I have driven it around the block twice while working on it. Does this sound like it may have some effect on the performance??????????????

If after you set the engine in and went to bolt up the converter and the converter was loose and not binding up then it was in all the way. If you don't get the converter in all the way into the front pump then it will bind against the flywheel and if forced will reak the front pump and you don't go anywhere.. I don't think the converter is your problem. Make sure the timing is right and the vacumn advance is hooked up right, then look at the carb.

Rejetting an out of the box carb is not an unexpected thing to face. If you've eliminated vaccum & ignition issues, go ahead and look at the jets. Might have to experiment with several sizes. When it is right, you'll be able to feel it. Also, make sure it is squirting raw fuel into the primary side when you move the accelerator. Odd idle mixture can lead to off-idle hesitation as well. Perhaps you can find a performance shop that has a dyno or emissions equipment capable of sniffing out the fuel ratio until you get the right combination.

Much luck!

Go to Edelbrock online and see if you can download the manual for that carb. May just need to adjust the two screws on the front of the carb., or, the choke. If ya can't access the info, let me know and I'll see if I can figure out how to upload the info. Also, which port is the vacuum advance connected to. Mine ran like crap connected to full vacuum.

Hey man I never said thanks but after reading one of your posts or threads you were talking about a harmonic balancer or flywheel. After reading it I got to thinking, when I took that junk 302 out and replaced it with a rebuilt 351w I got the flywheels switched. It runs great now. I still had some hesitation. I figured out that all point system have some sort of resistor. The pertronix ignitor I installed said to do away with the resistor. Well on my 70f100 it has a resistor wire under the dash. I located it, cut it and caped it off. Now it almost screams. The only thing I have left to do now is reset the carburetors power mode with some metering rods. Then I know I will be in business. Thanks for looking out for me but I do have the manual for the carb. Did you ever decide what to do with your motor?

Thanx. You said you have the manual for the carb. Did you try all the adjustments, especially the idle mixture screws?
The motor has to be, apparently, rebuilt again. I thought for a brief couple of hours that it was just an oil issue, but, after installing a mechanical oil pump, it seems my original crankshaft worries were valid. Not really feeling like it's a hassle, just don't have the funds available right now. And, of course, I want to stroke it...
