Yup I heard it... 3 times. I scared the %$#@ out of me.

The truck, 2002 F250 S-Crew 4X4 68,000 miles. Good care... lubing all that....

After sitting for 3 days. I started it. I heard a nasty growl for 1/2 a second during the engine run-up. I waited for a clunk and silence but it ran nicely... no problems.

Parked it,.... started it again.. no problems...

After 10 hours over night.... again on start-up. It seemed to appear after ignition, after I released the key on starter motor position. just a half second.. a growl... a bark....then no problem.

A got another one tonight... Just at start-up after starter release. 1/2 second bark. That's why I joined this group... PURE FEAR.

Please somebody tell me its the power steering pump or the surpentine belt...?? Definitely engine.. tough to reproduce unless it has been sitting.

 

It could be just the anti-drainback valve in your oil filter being defective. The engine will make a growling sound momentarily on cold start-up until proper lube hits the top end.

 

Well there you go. I had just replaced the Oil and filter. I put in a FRAM. I like the rubbery grippy coating on the OD. I'll get a new filter and swap it out. Worth a try. Thanks....
