i put a new holley carburetor on my 1980 Ford F350 with a 460, and it idles pretty high, probably at about 900 or a little more. when i drove it for about 5 to 10 minutes, and as soon as i shut it off, about 5 seconds later, it made a loud pop, that sounded louder than a shotgun, and i saw a flame come out the exhaust, and i know this isnt good, so whats your ideas?
I have a 600CFM 4160 Holley on mine 460 and it worked great out of the box. What Holley do you have? Have you tried setting the idle down to about 600 RPM. Sounds like too high of idle was your shotgun blast.
Did you set your floats. My 390cfm came from the factory witht the floats set as low as they would go. Set the floats, set the idle mixture and idle. If they doesn't work maybe you need to re-jet
my buddy set my floats, and the fuel mixture, but i messed with the idle speed, cuz when its cold, every time i put it in drive or reverse, it drops to a really low idle and sometimes dies. so i just set the idle hella high. this carb is new to me, but my buddy had it on a camaro with a 396. i dont know what idle speed will keep it running under load(in gear.) does anybody else have that little problem?
i do use the choke until it starts warming up, but should i drive the first mile or so with the choke closed, to make sure it warms up good? i dont know what the fuel mixture should be set to, but my friend who owned it before me used it on his camaro, and so he did the tuning on it. i have a manual choke on it, cuz i dont trust electric chokes. could a possible vacuum leak be the problem? cuz i thought that was it, but i couldnt find any bad vacuum lines.
