I have a 1997 f-250hd(old style) Does anyone know of a tsb on the aluminum wheels frozen on the hubs? If I don't rotate the tires every three months I can't remove the wheels without a sledge hammer. I've greased the back of the wheels but it doesn't last.
I've never heard of it. Try a pure silicone spray with an butyl carrier and coat liberally after wire brushing the hub. I don't know that it will work, but it's the direction I'd go in. We used to release the wheels on old cars by hitting the end of the axle with a 3# hammer in the days of rust and steel. The shock pops them off.
Aluminum oxidizes to steel as it does, the alum. "grows", wire brush both surfaces apply never-seez or equiv. don't expect it to last much more than 6-12 months depending on your environment, it worked for me
Dissimilar metals form a simple "battery" when they get wet, as wheels, rims and hubs do from normal driving. An aluminum anti-sieze compound will work well.
Fredrick, you're absolutely right, a remedy to this problem might be to paint the inner surface with an acrylic clear coat. We ran into this with 304 ss slides and light alloy frames. Anti-sieze compound cured those ills. I'd venture to guess the road salt in that region would add to the propensity.
My putt-putt Probe aluminum wheels will do that. I started putting anti-seize grease on the back of the rim and hub and they come off a little easier. The old sledge wont hurt..just make sure you hit rubber!
Another Way Of Getting the wheels off the the hubs is to loosen the nuts a little bit then drive a few feet then slam on the brakes, I had To do this on a couple vehicals Now
