390?

I found an old junk yard that has many FE's in it I have a 73 with a 390 and I am looking for a good core 390, 428, to start to build so I can simply switch engines when the time comes. Does anyone have a list of casting numbers so I can identify the engines that I am looking at any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Casting numbers won't tell you displacement.

Some of the early ones will but as Dealford said some will not being generic and used for several different displacment blocks. Gene's automotive enthusiasts site has a list of casting FE numbers. Sorry I have no link to the site. Besides measuring the bore bring 17/64", 13/64" and a 7/64" drill bits with you. You can knock out a freeze plug to gap the wall cores. This will tell you the thickness of the cyl walls. Crude but a quick way to ID blocks in the bone yard. 17/64" bit shank will snugly fit most 352,390,360 wall cores. 13/64" bit 406, 428 and some 391. 7/64" and smaller 427 size wall cores. You can convert the 64"'s as needed for your paticular set of bits. This is just a basic guide and of course there are exceptions and Ford would often use different cores at times. Like a batch of thickwall 428's and such. Lots of 64 block castings and some FT have the 427 crossbolt bosses. Some 406 blocks have 427 wall cores etc.....G.
