first post

just want to say hi to everyone,this is my first post. about 90% decided
about switching from my psd to v10. tow 10,000 lb 5th wheel about 6
or 7 times a year. thanks

Wecome to the V10 forum and switching from diesel to gas is a major decision. I did my research and two months of V10 ownership has made me feel 100 % certain that I made the right choice. I owned diesels for 11 years and love the 7.3. If you read my posts you know I hate the 6.0 litre but that motor left me stranded twice, was much harder on fuel , and leaked like a seive so I agree I am prejudiced towards the 6.0 PSD more than most people. That will never change and I will never own a truck with another 6.0 PSD. I drove the Cummins and the Duramax. I liked the Duramax the better of the two but the new Chevs and GMC just don't feel like a truck to me. The Dodge is not a real CC and I did not care for it at all. My only concern about going V10 was if I drove it with a heavy foot, and at 54 years of age, am I really going to change the way I drive..... not likely, was it going to drink gas like my 88 460 did? Well I am happy to say the V10 is about 40% better on gas than my 460 was and has much more power, I am through checking my mileage. Short 8 mile commute in mixed driving I can get 12. I can drive it the way I want to drive and have a little fun and I always do at
least 10. This type of driving in a 460 got 6 MPG and 12 in my 6.0 PSD.
Akers4000, how long are your tow trips going to be? If you were towing 30000 miles a year there is a chance the PSD might be a better choice for you, ( assuming you get a good one and aparently there are some good ones) Take care , Wrenchtraveller.

Welcome to FTE and the V10 forum

Get the new 3 valve V10 362HP 455Ftlbs torque and Torqueshift 5R110 trans mated to 4.30:1 rear LS unit and you will have a very capable towing rig.

Get the UpFitter switches, and Integrated Trailer Brake Controller.

Adjust pedals are a waste of money as is the real back up sensors. IMO

Deliberately get the engine heater, Camper Package, and 4X4.

If your NOT getting a King Ranch then deliberately ask for 17 inch rims the tire selection for 18 inch rims is dismal! You need "E" rated tires and there are too few choices and all expensive for the 18s. Of course if you choose KR option you are stuck with 18 inch rims.

mostly tow about 50 miles away. once a year about 140 mile trip.

what is a engine heater? why should i get the camper package?
yes i will be getting a K.R. dually

With short tow trips like that, you don't want or need a diesel. The V10 is the perfect choice for you. Go 4.30 gears and the camper pkg gives you rear stabilizer bars that make your truck handle much better, also overload springs which are nice to have.
Engine block heater , if you ever planning to be in weather colder than 10 below zero it is nice to plug your truck in. I believe most V10s will start at as cold as 20 below zero without being plugged in but it is a lot easier on them when you plug them in at cold temp. Take care, Wrench.

The $30-60 factory engine heater will let you plug in to 110VAC and keep the engine warm through the night. Next morning your heater will warm the cabin in less than 2 minuets and the pre warmed oil and warmed rotating parts will not create a lot of cold start wear. Engine will last longer. I use a heavy amp timer and set it to pre heat about 3 hours before I get up in the morning. This will save a little electricity.

The camper package gives better spring rate (heavier) for the rear and adds the stabilizer like wrench said. However I did not research DRW so not certain that it is not already included with dually I know for a SRW this is best way to get the heavier springs and stabilizer.

Unless you Plow there is no reason to get the heavy front suspension stuff.

On the 4X4 you can choose stock or FX4 package. The FX4 adds some steel shields for the transfer case and fuel tank and a set of Ford branded Rancho 5000 white shocks and funky red plastic accordion LOOKING covers. They are OK shocks but not the best for Heavy Fords. I got the FX4 package for the shields.

I am seriously considering the next shocks to be Rancho RS9000 with the IN cabin Remote selector. Mainly because I like tight shocks on the highway when I tow, and loose, less stiff when beating ourselves to death on long back woods, county roads getting to and from camping, hunting and fishing sites. The stock Ford shocks and firm full psi tires will beat you to death on bad roads.

go for the v10 and welcome to the hide away of v10 owners. just got back from playing on a dyno with 2 , 05 v10's one had 248.5 hp on the ground in a 4x4 chassis and the other a 05, v10 in a 2x4 and that posted 262.? . is that enough h/p for you?

Just to affirm a block heater, it is good to have one, I live here in MT and it gets -20 to -35 degrees below zero, I have no where to plug it in here in my house so the truck doesn't get plugged in but I can attest that the v-10 WILL start in extreme below zero weather
