Any Trick To Installing A Flywheel On A 292

I have a 64 F100 with a 292, originally had the t-86 three speed with overdrive. Im swapping in a that came out of a 65 ford, and the flywheel off a 63 ford which also had a t-98 on it (both of the trucks had 292's in them). Im having a hell of a time installing the flywheel. I can't get the bolt holes to line up....I can get a max of four bolts in. Does it have to go on a certain way? Any other tips?

Red face

I believe that one flywheel bolt is slightly offset. Turn the flywheel one turn at a time until you can install all the bolts.

Good luck.

Okay Ill play with it some more....also can anyone tell me where there is a piece missing where the flywheel bolts up to the crankshaft. It looks like someone took a bite out of it, but it is perfectly smooth and rounded so i think its supposed to be there...

so I turned and turned the flywheel over and over again with little effect. Finally, I was able to put in 5 bolts, which seemed pretty good to me, so I installed it wiht 5 bolts. Installed the clutch and the bellhousing and the starter and finally I got the engine to fire up...runs like the day it was born. Do you think I can get away with five bolts or will I run into trouble somewhere?

You will know if you have trouble when flywheel and/or tranny parts start flying up through the floorboard. It must not be the correct flywheel.. Realize that those things weigh something like 35 pounds. At high rpm., orr even moderate rpm, if they are out a balance a bunch, something is going to give. Maybe it will only be the crank.

You stated that you were swapping in a engine or trans from a 65? Y-blocks were not produced after 64. I'm wondering if you are putting a FE flywheel onto a y-block.

There is only 6 possible ways for the flywheel to bolt on. I mark the first hole and turn until it all lines up.

Im not positive whether the truck was a 63 a 64 or a 65, but all I know is that the trucks I got parts from all had 292's in them. As for now, I'm saying screw it on the flywheel because I've tried every possible way of putting it on and none work. I'm not paying for another flywheel either, so im just going to name the truck "Five Bolt" and move on to installing the transmission

Thumbs down

The flywheel may not be balanced now. You have a bolt missing, and you might ruin the motor. Wanna take the chance of blowing up the truck just because you didn't want to do it right?

Get the proper flywheel for this truck. Dont be a cheapskate. It could kill you!
