I have a 86 Ford F150, 300, 6cly. The problem has been the starter. We have put in 13 starters and 8 flywheels in 3 years. Just put in a new crankshaft, starter, flywheel and still having the same problem. It is eating up the starters. Ford said there isnt but one starter for this truck. Noone knows why it eats them. Anyone ever have this problem and know how to correct it??? We are at wits end. Please help if ya can. Thank you so much for your time.
Hi, well welcome to the boards My brother in law had an 86 150 300 six with automatic and it ate starters like a kid eating candy we changed starters flywheels and when we finally got it top stop was when we shimmed the starter. I went under the truck chalked the starter gear and then hit the starter pulled it back out and checked the chalk we shimmed it with washers depending on how the chalk is is where you have to shim to tighten or loosen the teeth against the flywheel I have only seen one other one ever that had to be shimmed it must be something in the way the bellhousing is made that causes it because I could find no other fix for it everything else was changed and it still did it until the shims. Thanks y'all. We just tried the shims and it didnt work, and the housing broke off the the other one. Anyone got a match?? lol. Just don't know what else to do with this truck. Thanks for your help though.
