Converting DC Powerwinch to Engine Hoist ?

Got a "hair brained" idea about trying this, but a few questions first:
1. Can a battery booster power the DC motor ?
2. Is the line speed too fast for pulling / lowering engines ?
3.Can the gearing be changed to correct line speed ?
4. Can the DC motor be run on A/C current ?
5. Has anyone tried this ?

Thanks, Chet

1. Yes for short periods of time.
2. Try using a ****** block to cut line speed in half or a double block to reduce it even more.
3. Not very easily, will also change rated weight capabilities.
4. No, need an inverter for that. They do make them, but not cost effective.
5. Yes, does work. Use a battery and battery charger to run the winch. Make sure the winch is rated for load lifting, not just pulling!

Most winches comes with a warning not to use them for overhead lifting for several good reasons. A winch rated for 6k pulling many times will be rated for 1k or less for vertical lifting. If it is a cheap winch and unless it is a worm drive it probably will not have an automatic braking feature if the power fails.

A triple chain hoist is only about $60.00, I think that is a better way to go.

Rebocardo is right, if the winch is not rated for overhead lifting it is not safe to use. The winch I have on my truck is, but it is not a standard winch it is designed for recovery. Safety should be first and foremost. Chain hoist is a great tool and a lot easier to control. They come in handy for lots of things. Also may consider renting an engine hoist...

If you use ****** blocks, you'll reduce the load on the winch motor/drive...no issue there...but you need to make sure the cable is rated to lift your work...the cable rating won't change.

Also, the more pullies on the bocks you use, the slower the operation will be.

Thanks for all the good advise, Considering the safety issues and effort required I think I will nix the idea.
