Computer anti-virus software

Does anyone have any ideas on which anti-virus software to get? I was thinking about both Norton Internet Security 2005 and Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2005, but when I went to both Amazon and epinions, the overall revues were'nt so kind. I was using McAfee Virus Scan Security Suite V.4.5.1B. but it let me down big time. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I am using Norton with no complaints. Have not had any problems with it contending with something else and have had no problems with system acting funny or doing things it shouldn't. I have Firefox for a browser, with it set to stop pop-ups. They are learning how to get past this more and more. Norton also has a setting for pop ups. Those that got past Firefox are not getting past Norton since I turned it on. If I turn it off, the pop ups return.
I stopped using McAfee years ago. We used to get it free from work. Had so many problems with it I started buying Norton. Had none of the problems I had with McAfee.
I do purchase the new versions every year as they add new stuff to the application. Just doesn't seem safe any more to just purchase the Virus definitions only. Too many people out there that are trying to screw you over that they have to keep up with. 10 years ago no one knew what spam or pop ups were. What is next.

Well I downloaded the Grisoft anti-virus software and it works great. Its free and updates automaticly. My computer crashed a few weeks ago so I had to dump my entire hard drive, I also downloaded the free Spybot Search and Destry. My comptuer runs great now, you know the saying, the best things in life are free

The free stuff should be fine if you don't wander into all kinds of sick websites. If you know where you are going and aren't clicking on 50 "blind-links" every day then you will be fine. Search the web for this: MajorGeeks .com.(not a link, search from your end)

I told you not to go to strange websites!!, No, just kidding it is valid, this is a good place to learn about PC security.

PC World magazine just did a test/review on some of the available anti-virus programs.

PC-cillin is #1.

I have been running PC-cillin for over 5 years, now. NO problems.
It 'runs home to momma' every three hours and updates.

Grisoft anti-virus is also good. It too, 'runs home to momma' to update. Free. Free is good.

Personally, I've had trouble with Norton. No more. Not me.

I have PC-cillin running on 3 PCs. 3 licenses - $39.00.

Just my 2¢.

Grisoft-AVG all the way. Saved my PC several times. Went to a couple of unknown web sites and WAM !! the screen went red and said "WARNING VIRUS" and shut down Windows before the virus could get in.

Great for trojans and spyware, but does not see viruses.

I also have adware se, and it does run extremely well. And it's free. Got my download from www.download.com

It's spyware software and not an anti-virus software though.

Of course if you're running broadband don't forget firewall protection.

When I was a kid that had to walk up hill both ways to school, we used freeav.com (should be same as grisoft) with adaware and spybot search, and for my accessory also trendmicro's online antivirus. If you get a virus make sure your antivirus hasn't been compromised.

Nowdays
Linux!

Given a free copy of XP pro for some work I did but can't agree with the license, and technically and legally neither can my bank or lawyer.

When I was a kid, our B&W TV and AM Radio still used vacumn tubes. Anyhow, I don't trust those online virus checkers or online optimizers. Your letting some web site probe around inside your computer with your blessings. How do you know what their looking at ? How do you know what information their gathering while their in there ? There used to be a program called OilChange a few years ago that would look around in your PC to see if anything needed to be updated and would download it to your PC. I didn't trust that either, and that was long before things got as bad as they are now. The only site I'll let do that now is grc.com They try to probe your ports to see if your firewall is up to snuff and then gives you a report whether it could or not and if it can, suggests how to remedy it.

Yep before my comptuer crashed the first thing to stop working was the cheesy Mcafee Anti-virus, the virus got in and infeceted my anti-virus, it really stinks to lose everything youve saved over the past 5 years but I had no choice, it was terrible. BTW I am also running the Mozilla Firefox browser (also free) and it is light years ahead of Internet Explorer, defintly switch to Mozilla.

I too also run Mozilla's Firefox web browser and sometimes Mozilla's Thunderbird e-mail client. I also sometimes use Opera for my web browser. All are free. Keep away from Microsoft's IE and outlook(express). If home land security (Tom Ridge) warns about M/S IE and outlook, what does that tell you.

I don't know what kind of virus you got, but this is why my drive is partitioned to C,D,E,F The one time I did get a virus years ago when my kid downloaded something it only trashed Windows and some stuff on C: drive. It didn't go over to the other drives. My AVG anti-virus and Zonealarm firewall and other security stuff is now on drives other then C: With AVG you make emergency startup floppies that are supposed to go in, in DOS mode if Windows won't start and kill or capture the virus.
Anything of importence on my computer I burn to CD just in case I do get a really bad one. That time I just DELTREE'd windows in dos and reinstalled it.
