valve guide seals

i have a 91 mazda b2200 carbed and the thing smokes like crazy when you first start it up. i'm thinking it's the valve guide seals. how hard is it to do with the head still on the block. or do i HAVE to take the head off...

Does it smoke if you idle it for a while and then gun it? Blue? Or is it white smoke when
cold?

the smoke smells like oil real bad. and i ca only see it when i first start it up in the morning and after it cools down for a couple of hours. after that i see no smoke when i drive it.
