My 352 runs great when cold, starts fast, idles well, and its nice and quiet. after 15 minutes of highway speeds, I get valve noise like I would if it was a quart low on oil, and the electric guage drops about 5 pounds, to about 25 pounds. I pulled the valve cover, and none of the lifters and rockers seem to have any slack, and the engine doesn't lose power. What could cause this?
Sounds like your engine is wearing out.
Your oil pressure is dropping because
1. the oil pump is worn out; and/or
2. the main bearings are worn down, causing the oil to escape from the mains before it can get to the top of the engine.
This is common behavior for FE motors.
I haven't done anything to the block, it was rebuilt 60,000 miles ago and ran fine up to this weekend. This weekend I changed the oil and replaced the cap, rotor, and reset the dwell on the points. I also fixed the choke. it was broken and would only open 3/4 of the way.
The noise and pressure drop happen after roughly 30 minutes if intown driving, or 15 minutes of highway driving. I don't know how accurate the oil guage is, but the pressure drop , maybe 5 pounds, only happens with the noise, and the pressure goes up when the noise clears
Well the engine should be in good shape then. Um I dont know what to reccomend here, maybe try some 20-50 oil? Also stay away from the Fram as they cause problems sometimes. I would say get a mechanical pressure gauge and see whats up, also, it may indeed be a lifter noise, you can replace them but youll have to get into the motor somewhat. I would get a stheschope and locate where exactly the noise is coming from.
Maybe try a new oil filter. Might be a problem with the new one installed. A bad batch possibly you never know. This would be the easiest and cheapest and have had that happen myself. Other than that was the oil pump replaced when engine was rebuilt? It could be the culprit possibly and just now showing it's age even if it was replaced with the rebuild 60k ago. Did you notice any metal grit in the oil when you changed it? G.
