Talking A NOOB with High Mileage.

Hey. What's happenin' out there?

I'd just like to say hello, and ask a few questions about the 4.2L V6.

I just bought the beast (yesterday), and it's a 98 F150 with the 4.2 and 5spd.

I love the truck. I love the way it drives. It... "Clicked" if you will...

So, I dropped the cash and picked it up. My only reservation about it is the mileage. It just broke 196K, making it not only the newest vehicle I've ever owned, but also the highest mileage.

I'm a maintenance freakshow, and I've already changed the oil to 5W30 (it's the only thing I ever use), and I hear a little bit of a ticka noise. I've read up on the site and have come to the understanding that it's a good chance it's my cats, or noisy rockers, etc, etc, etc. I've spent half a day with my head jammed under my hood trying to find it.

I guess what I'm wondering is what should I be looking for in this thing? What kinds of easy backyard mechanic things can I do now to prolong this engine?

BBM,
Hello and welcome to FTE and the 4.2 forum! Glad to have you here!
Looks like you have jumped to the head of the class as far as mileage goes. I have 160,000 miles on my 2000 and Travlnman has that, or more, on his by now.
I'm assuming you are aware of the lower inatke manifold gasket and/or timing chain cover gasket issues by now.
If not, then ask and we'll give more info.
Here is a previous post of mine that sums up my sentiments.

I can'tthink of anything other than the gaskets that warrant special attention.
You know the cats are bad to fail at higher mileage.

I have been diligent, but not obsessive, about maintenance.
I use 10W30 for avg. 4500-5000 mile drain intervals.
I don't know if it will help prevent problems, but change you coolant every year. Thomas and I have both had radiator problems -seems like about 130,000 miles or so.
I don't think 100K miles on a set of plugs and wires works for most folks. 60-70K seems to be about right.

here's a quick and easy way to change the transmission fluid.

Again, glad you are here and hope you stick around.

Edit to add: If the engine has received decent maintenance and regular oil changes, 196,000 miles would not scare me at all.
Do you know what weight oil has been run in it previously?
Single owner prior to you?
