Red face fearing the worst.

I have 65 f100 with a 352 in it(3sp man) and Im afraid the engine is blown. The truck sat for about three years until about 4 months ago and Ive been working on it since then. I always beleived the motor to be in good condition seemed to run strong and didnt use/leak any oil, oil was clean. Today I was on my way to finally get the thing inspected and much to my surprise a kind of thump noise and it dies and wont start back up. I checked the dipstick and there was a little bit of creamish color mixed in with the oil, almost like creamer in coffee(I didnt taste it, anyway Im not sure what that substance was. Im really hoping that there is another answer to my problem than a rebuild, as I dont really have the time or money for that right now. Any suggestions would be helpful, nothing is too obvious trust me.

Thanks,

Nick

Sounds like coolant leaking into the oil. This can be a number of things such as blown head gasket, intake gaskets. Do you have a tool that you can pressurize the cooling system?

Had a similar problem on my 360 wound up being the intake gaskets.

no I dont have anything to pressure the coolant system. that is anything specific, I do have a air compressor and plenty of tools.

If it is the intake gasket can I test it to make sure or just replace it and hope.

I should add that I tried putting it in gear when it was being towed home. It certainly sounded like it wanted to start but wouldnt fire up.

I am wondering if the engine froze and cracked the block while it was sitting for that spell?

joe, anythings possible but it has been used a little bit since it was sitting if that makes a difference. Lots of Idling and some driving. There are no external indicators of damage. I guess what Im wondering is, are there any signs to look for that would tell me what Im dealing with.

Without being there to look at it im gonna guess a snapped or streched timing chaing. The milky oil is very bad but wont cause the motor to not fire, itll just eat it away. Sounds like this engine is NOT in good condition, could have a blown headgasket or intake gasket and some other problems. Take it apart and see what happend.

my first thought when it happened was that i threw the timing chain, but then the milky substance in the oil had me wondering.

thanks for the help everyone im going to tear into it this afternoon and weekend.

One more question for the experts, If it is a blown head gasket or intake valve should I just replace the gasket or do I need to do a complete rebuild? The reason I ask is the engine was not and hasnt been reall hot in a long time. I thought (could certainly be wrong) that normally a head gasket or intake gasket would fail due to high engine temps?

Anyway if the engine is toast then im probably headed for a donor as I would like to upgrade to power steering and disc brakes too.

If you blew a headgasket (which I kinda doubt) then youll need to check the block and head mating surfaces to see if they are warped. I dont think its a blown headgasket. You have done the normal checks for spark and fuel, right? I think its an intake gasket leaking. It could proably use a rebuild.

because the truck really hasnt gotten hot I didnt think head gasket right away either(also no smoke when she shut down) but the if it is coolant in with the oil that would explain it.

anyway I dont really trust myself to do a rebuild. So if it comes to that Ill probably throw something in there to replace it and take a run at rebuilding the FE for practice and maybe eventualy get it back in there.

I did take a look at my shop manuals and went through removing the intake. I will probably start by checking the timing chain.

A leaking intake gasket will also cause water in the oil.
