i need help my 93 ford explorer died on me ..will start just fine but when you go to put in rev or drive it just dies..someone said my transmission locked up and need a new one ..anyone else have this problem 4x4 went out could that cuz the trans to lock up any ideas please help thanks
Sounds more like the torque converter lockup is not disengaging. You can try something to determine if the failure to disengage is electrical or machanical.
On the transmission (left front quadrant) there is a wire connector (3 leads I think) that feeds the 3-4 upshift and TCC lockup solenoids. Try disconnecting this. If it does OK then problem is electrical. Could be a short in the transmission internal soleniod wiring or faulty PCM. (note: disconnecting this and driving short distances will not harm transmission, but these functions will not work)
If not, then most likely it is either a stuck soleniod valve or converter failure. I would investigate the soleniod valve before I assumed a faulty torque converter.
Of course, if you find large amount of debris in the pan when investigating the soleniod in the valve body, you are probably looking at a torque converter failure that will require a complete trans rebuild anyway.

Sounds like the torque converter clutch is stuck on. Depending on the condition of the rest of the transmission, it shouldn't require a new transmission. Often this is just the result of crud in the valve body. Valve body can be removed and cleaned with the transmission in the vehicle.
