can anyone tell me if it is worth it to remove my front drive shaft for a long road trip? I'll be driving across country this summer and am trying to sqeeze out every MPH that I can get.

not that familiar with pre 90s but if you have freewheel hubs up front then all you will do by removing the front driveshaft/ prop shaft is save weight as they don't rotate when on the move unless the truck is in 4x4 mode.

Along with muckypaws statment, the driveshaft dosent weagh that much so I don't see how it would make a noticable difference.

another Q about the front drive shaft. I Was under teh truck earlier today and was turning the front shaft by hand and noticed it spun the tires a little but would slip. does this have to do with the auto hubs I havent replaced yet. (i know I know I bought the warns like over a month ago) let me know if the slipping s a bad thing

You should usually be able to turn it maybe 1/2 a turn before they lock in. If they still slip then either the hubs are nackered or the driveshaft needs to turn slightly faster for the clutches to engage in the hubs.

As long as the hubs are disengaged there is no point to removing the front DS. Without the hubs AND t-case engaged, there is no drag from the front driveline on the truck. If you are trying to "lighten up" for the trip, remove the top...it weighs a LOT more than the front shaft.

My main concern was drag but sounds like that is not a issue, I'd like to take the top off but I don't have a soft top for it and the one's i've seen and liked are too much $$$ right now, thanks to all for the info...
