removal of tranny and torsion bars?
Hello everyone! I own a 98/f150/4x4/4.6L/auto tranny... My tranny is slipping in O.Drive so I need to get it out so I can fix it.
Do you need to remove the (torsion bars) and (torsion bar crossmember) to get the transfer case and tranny out? I unbolted the transfer case off the tranny and slid it back but there is no room to drop it out with that crossmember there. I unbolted the tranny and tried removing the whole thing at once with my tranny jack but this doesn't work either.
I unbolted the torsion crossmember, I marked the bolts and removed them along with the pin the bolt goes through. The torsion bars have no pressure on them and are loose. The truck is on jackstands with the wheels dangling. How do you get the bars out of the front suspension? Do you need a removal tool? I see there is a hex end on the torsion bar, stuck in a hex shaped hole in the lower a-arm. Does this end just rusted in there and need a beating to get it out? Or is there a puller/ removal tool to get this out?
Any tricks or sugestions? Has anyone ever removed there tranny/ transfer case? Please..... and help is appreciated?

Yup. I have an 01 which may be different. You have to soak both ends of the torsion bars with WD40. The next day take off all tension. I needed a gear puller to release all tension and remove the crossmember. then wiggle the torsion bars in a rotating circle and they will break loose. They can slid out through the front or you can pull them out the back. No puller needed other than getting the tension bolts off at the crossmember end. The top 2 bolts on the tranny to engine are... well I had plenty of words for it. I thought I could get the transfer case out with the tail piece of the tranny attached but forget it!. You gotta go one piece at a time. Good luck. and watch your fuel lines above the transfer case, I pinched mine but are still useable.
