Does this look promising to you guys?

Hey, y'all!

I was just browsing around in EbayMotors and I came across this.
It's a turbocharger for a 4.2. The item number is 7961366366. It's a Garrett T3.

Do you think it would be good to put on my '97 4.2 and how much power can I expect from putting this turbo on?

Do I have to run premium gas to prevent detonation and pinging? Remember, the highest octane in my town is 89.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Hmmm...

Be very wary of getting a turbo...you can almost garauntee that it will require some fabbing and stuff. I'm not big on turbo's and I can't really tell you much about them, but from what I've read, they can give you crazy power, but it usually doesn't last very long.

Okay, so your saying that it's not worth it, right? Am I better off waiting for the companies to make a supercharger for the 4.2? Which company do you prefer to supercharge? Why don't they have one for the 4.2 yet? Is it due to low demand????

It was for a Garrett T3 turbocharger. But if it's not worth it, I can always go for a supercharger.

But I will have to save my money for one. They cost a LOT!!!! But it's due to the amount of parts involved.

Like I asked in my previous post, which company is the best to buy a supercharger from? Which one is cheaper?

Also, I read about HorizonHuskies having a lot of problems with his. What company did he get it from? I dont remember. What did he have to do to make his work? Also, I don't remember.

Garrett is his name, hence the joke.

We need him to answer your questions. Post a seperate thread with his name in it and he'll answer.

I'm pretty sure that his was so much trouble that he dumped it, I'm not completely certain though.

I ran nitrous out of mine at the track for a while and it was awesome. I installed it in very little time too. It's not as nice as a supercharger but what do you expect out of a 6 cylinder motor. they really don't make that much stuff for the V6.

Sooooo, I jacked my truck up and changed out the gearing and put in an LSD so I just go mudding with it now and aint worried about top speed.

Actually, I think the SC was discontinued for production...at least that's what Garrett was saying if I remember correctly. (Garrett, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Actually, now the new thing is getting an STS style turbo setup (kind of) for our trucks. I know of 2 ppl that have this setup off hand.

What are the pros and cons of a turbo compared to a SC? Why is the SC going out of production? Is it due to low demand?

Okay, I'll post a new topic, put his name on and ask him.

Can you at least please answer my question-If I do buy one of the turbo setups from Talley once they go into production, will my 4.2 survive on 89 octane gas with a turbo setup? That's the only thing that keeps me from pumping up my 4.2, but if there were 91 octane gas or higher, I would definitely put in a chip and so on.

Also, will my mileage drop if I install a turbo? Or will it stay the same if I keep my foot out of it?

Turbochargers turn wasted heat/energy into boost, which turns into power. The parastatic loss of a turbo is about 5-10 hp, a supercharger can require over 50hp to turn at full boost. A proper turbocharger will also be very efficent in its boost production in relation to heat. Roots blower in comparison are like flamethrowers. Very inefficent and power robbing. A turbocharger setup for our truck requires custom fabbing. Trust me, I know. I was the first to turbocharge a V6 f150. I helped Ckplinger every day, and I am helping others. A t3 turbo, from the above post, is way too small. In fact, a t3/t4 hybrid is a little small for anything but a stock engine. I recommend a T4 turbo. There is a program online called Turbo Calculator that will determine the most efficent turbo for any application, and it also shows the turbo's compressor maps.
