I got to wondering about the rear axle under a 1986 F-150 4x4 that I just bought. The axle code is "19".....same code as on my 97 Lariat. Same rear end??
If so...it's non-limited slip...right? Ok....if so.....what about when I put the 86 into 4 wheel drive and get in some mud. Do both front wheels spin and just the one rear that's not getting any grip thus giving me three wheel drive?
This is my first 4x4 and I was just wondering about that.
Thanks in advance.
If you can check the tag and look for a 3 digit number like this 3.55 or 3.73 that will tell you the ratio then if it has Ls either in front of the number or after , that means that it has a Limited slip rear = 3 wheel drive. another place to check is the door tag it will list the options of the truck.
19 is the code for a 3.08 axle. The front is a 3.07. Actually a rare ratio for a 4x4. Most were 3.55. Both differentials are open, meaning when the tires spin, one wheel on each axle will spin while the other sits idly by. When the wheels aren't spinning, traction is distributed approximately equally.

Andy I'm curious did these trucks come with LS as an option?

According to the Ford Door Sticker Decoder site...."19" means a 3:55 non-limited slip rearend. "18" is for the 3:08 gear.
