I was looking over my 55 today and discovered that this thing doesnt have any vin numbers on it, or atleast not that I can find. They are supposed to be on the drivers door right, What am I to do now. I bought it from a friends dad who has owned it since 84 and hasnt touched it. Am I missing something here, and if not, what can I do to get Vins back on this truck.
Steve
When I got my truck the V.I.N. numbers werent anywhere on the cab either.
Call your local Highway Patrol, and ask them what you should do. I did that, and in about 2 weeks, they sent an officer over to check my engine #s, and my frame #s to make sure all was on the up-and-up. A week later, the officer came to MY house, and riveted my new V.I.N. #s to the inner drivers side of my door. Because the truck had been sitting for so long, they had to issue me new #s.
Call your local CHP, and ask them what you can do. They should help you out.
The VIN should be on the passenger side frame rail. It's there probably, may need to wire wheel the frame to see it. If you have the front clip on, you may not be able to get to it.
A little caution on the location. I remember that a couple of the fellas found theirs on the driver side rail but I can't remember the year for sure. At any rate, as you guys mentioned, it should be on the top of one of the rails somewhere between the firewall and the front axle.
What about the VIN in the glove box? I know the memory is going but I was pretty sure 56 was the first (and only?) year to have the VIN on the door post. Prior to that I thought they were on a tag in the glove (dispatch) box.

Couple things,
I think you are correct on the VIN is on the glovebox door prior to 56.
How deep is the stamping normally? Could a guy cleaning up the frame rails during an IFS install (or two), inadvertently remove the numbers?
And is theft protection/recovery the original reason for the frame stamping? I know the dash tags on military vehicles will sometimes "fall off", and are accidently re-attached to a truck that has new seat cushions and a better heater.
My 55 has it riveted on the inside of the glove box door on a builders plate (for lack of a better term). My 48 had it stamped on the drivers side rail, if I remember right, it was on the top. I wire wheeled both sides until I found it & then had a Highway Patrol Officer verify it so I could register the truck.

Jon
Yep, I panicked for no reason, its in the glove box held in by regular screws. What a relief. thanks guys. I thought I was screwed there for a while.

post script: I found the vin for my 56 on the passenger side frame rail above the crossmember for the core support. FYI it's a good idea to photograph the vin before you start cutting things up
Actually, the most important part is that VIN# on your DMV registration matches. The tag on the door beam is easily purchased and you can even stamp the correct VIN# into it. May not be original, but it'll work.
