5.9 Cummins VS 6.0 PSD

Well since this seems to be a hot topic for debate, I chose to make a thread just for it. Keep it clean guys. Compare between the two, and give your opinions.

I went for the Cummins. Not because I'm loyal to Mopar. But because the Cummins has continued to live up to its name. Especially when it comes to reliability, and longevity. HP, and tourque numbers are only a small piece of the pie.

I'm a heavy equipment diesel tech. I'm glad people buy machines with Cummins power. Lets just call it job security!

The real question that isn't asked is do you have to take the Dodge that comes free-of-charge with that Cummins engine?

Well, if I were to have to choose purely based on the engine, I would have to choose the cummins without a doubt. If I were to take the drivetrain into consideration then I would have to lean towards the powerstroke. The powerstroke/torqueshift combo is superior to the cummins/48RE in my opinion. Next year Dodge will finally put a transmission (68RFE) that can take advantage of the cummins powerband. The cummins and 6-speed auto trans will be an awesome combo.

No Polarbear. Just the engine.

We are al adults here, and I think we can discuss this topic like adults. This is a great topic for a good debate, as we can see in other threads where it comes down to PSD VS CTD.

Nice to see a simple poll to collect opinions. I fall into the group that likes the Cummins more but wishes it wasn't only available in a Dodge.

I personally couldn't care less about the Cummins supposedly superior reputation.
I believe the PSD is actually quite reliable, yes there have been teething issues with it, but most have been drivability problems with it, not failures which stop the engine running.

My reasoning behind choosing the PSD are as follows:
Mileage is about the same. (no points)
Ability to make insane power out of an engine is irrelevant when we are talking stock engines. (no points)

The Cummins has a much inferior power delivery, I personally think that obscene amounts of torque at low rpm isn't that useful, because it is rarely used.
The average diesel engine will spend more time at around 2000rpm, which is where the PSD is really hauling.
I know some people may say that low down torque is useful when hauling 40000lbs of grain around a paddock, but how many people do this, compared to towing 10000lb a 5th wheel at 60+mph?
Plus, the PSD can tow 40000lbs briefly around a paddock, if you so wish, admittedly not as well as a Cummins, but it is capable of it.
Can a Cummins maintain 75mph up a 7% grade with a 10000lb trailer behind it?
I doubt it.
The Cummins is quite good with a manual, and you can let it lug around at low rpm, but with an Auto, the PSD is kept in its "sweet spot" from launch right through to cut out.

Plus, the Cummins weighs more than a PSD, which sacrifices payload capacity, and makes the truck feel even more like a lead tipped arrow.

The Cummins was a good engine, and appears to be quite durable, but I don't think it is as good an all round engine as the 6ohhh

Sorry I gotta disagree here, the Cummins probably dosent weigh much, if anymore than the PSD. With manuals I would take a Cummins but not with autos. Cummins can go 75 mph up 7% easily even with 15000 in tow.
You can never have too much torque at low rpm as far as I'm concerned, low rpm is where most of the work is done. Theres nothing like having plenty of engine torque at low rpm, no need for ridiculously low gearing like 4.56's.
The Cummins will make the same torque at 2900 that it makes at 1600.
Make mine a SD everytime, and if I gotta take a 6.0 with it, no problem here, but if I get a choice with it, make it a Cummins for me.

I will see if I can find the link for the weights.
From memory there was about 150lbs in it.
The Cummins weighed a bit over 1100lbs, and the PSD just below 1000lbs.
Interestingly, the Duramax, due to its Aluminium heads weighed about 100lbs less than the 6.0.

It would be interesting to see the sales figures if the Ram came with the PSD, and the SD with the CTD.
As much as I like the PSD, I am sure more SD's would be sold, just how many more would be interesting.
Do people buy a Ram just for the engine?

I've heard of a few people who buy the Ram for the engine. One of my subsisute teachers doesn't know much about trucks but she says her husband "wants a Cummins turbo diesel" to pull their trailer. My farmer friend's dad has a few Cummins powered tractors.
He likes Ford trucks but also considered the Ram just for the Cummins option. Some people at turbodieselregister mention they like Fords better but the Cummins was enough to sway them to Dodge.
