I had a push rod come off the lifter, so in putting it back I decided to check the lash on all the valves. Based on the setting .019 (cold) from the Ford shop manual I had to back off some of the adjusting bolts a 1/4". I rotated the crankshaft by hand to the 3 different setting positions. By the time I was done, I had push rods falling down all over the place. When the lifters are down on some of the cylinders there is a 1/4" gap between the rocker arm and the top of the valve.
What am I doing wrong? The manual did say to use a remote starter to move the crank. Does oil pressure hold up the lifters until they are pushed up by the cam?
I hope someone can educate me on this procedure. Thanks
