Being how V10s are so rare around here. , I am curious what a pre- 05 stock V10 sounds like when pulling hard above 3000 RPM.
The exhaust sytem on these new 3 valve V10s is pretty neat. They are very quiet until up around 3500 RPM and then they have a very unique high performance sound. Fred , how much does the new 3 valve heads have to do with this ? Speaking of the valves this V10 of mine can be good on fuel, if you force yourself to keep your foot out of it. I have done over 13 mixed highway and city when I drive like my 78 year old Dad would drive, but if I let the inner child in me get out a little too often ( its easy to do in these big fun machines) well the mileage goes down real quick to about 9 . Take care, Wrench.
The 3 Valve heads are not a sound factor. If you can imagine ther are now two smaller intake valves instead of just one but they open and close in tandem. I understand that with the 3 valve head the exhaust valve is a little bigger to balance the flow. I also bet the variable volume plenum has some effect.
The biggest difference in exhaust tone and raspiness is in the radically redesinged 05 exhaust system itself. With the exception of the weird "S" snake path the drivers side makes to marry up at the "collector" it is a very well balanced system.
If you ever get a chance crawl under a 2001-2004 and you will see what I mean. The early version looks thrown together with more tought going into making it fit instead of making it work. The 2005 Exhaust is a BIG part of the new found power. It very obviously lookslike it flows 30% or better just by design.
No I do NOT think there are any great gains to be had by bolting a 2005 exhaust system to a 01-04... Ford did a LOT of work to get the extra 52 ponies and the exhaust is just one of the many redesigns.
If you 05' owners would let me into the discussion, My 03' v10 HAD a very cool sound under those conditions. It is almost impossible to discribe. I aggressive harmonic sound. It really hummed. Now I have completely redid the entire exhaust system. Banks Powerpack is what I did and slapped on a FM 70 instead of the dynaflow Banks muffler (really sounded stupid). The sound completely changed. At idle it has a big block V8 sound. Really awesome sounding. Under normal accleration, it has a good tone to it. Under Hard acceleration (2500-3500) AWESOME. Like nothing else on the road. There is this one rmp range that the gremlins come out. 2000 rpm is when the illigitimate child comes out. You know, the dreaded V6 sound. It does not sound exactly like one but very close. There has been a ricer comparison before but that is way far from the truth. The ricers sound the same no matter what rpm. The V10 changes often. It has many faces of sound. From Big Block V8 to V6 city to Nextel Cup car at 9500 RPM. Others have said indy car....maybe with a stock system with a muffler swap, but never out of my beast. My GF get tired of me asking her to drive up and down the street so I can listen to it as it acclerates and cruises past me.
Good post boxcar, If you ever get a chance I would like to hear a sound clip of your beast idling. When I was a diesel junky back in another lifetime and another website...........grrrrrrrrr......... Diesel Don was my name and I trashed gassers every chance I had. Any way the diesel guys all posted the idling PSDs to hear the dreaded cackle of the 7.3 and loss of pilot injection in the 03, and the latest flash in the 04s ahhhgggg I am getting sick to my stomach.
Bottom line an idling diesel is truly an ugly sound compared to 10 burning and 4 turning. Take care and all you V Tenners out there have a great weekend, Wrench.
I love the sound of a powerstroke, doesnt matter if it's idle or 3300 RPM, I LOVE IT!!!
Oh yeah that neat sound when you start them up at minus 10. The sound of things breaking , I love it too , it usually means somethings coming apart and I get paid to fix it. Take care, wrench.
fred said how it looks. big and nasty and it works . i spent the am yesterday at my buddies high performace trans shop looking this baby over on a lift it is amazing what ford did with that exhaust. never mind the whole truck. need to get some more miles on it and oil changes then we are going to strap it down and see what the machine says. wonder what it has on the ground?
Fred hits the nail both times there. That rising note from the exhaust, followed by a kick in the pants is just like other cars I have driven with the variable intake plenum
And ford was forced to pay more attention to the exhaust path if the additional valves were to provide any value.
Boxcar- now I want a girlfriend!
Well the sound inside the cab and outside is so different. Just reving it in park or holding something against the pedal to hear it just does not work. When the engine is under load it sounds completely different. So she rolls here eyes at me and says "boys and thier toys" I had my dad do it a few times and he beat the living crap out of it. He had a 5.4L in his F-150. He was so impressed with the V10 thet he kept going upa nd down the street. I though for sure the cops were gonna get called on him. He spent most of the time at 4k rpm. He was i driving for about 15-20 min. Man did it sound good. That is when the nextel cup engine at 9500 rpm and the V10 with the banks powerpack + FM70 so really similar. After his 15-20 min romp he burned about 1/4 tank of fuel.......NO KIDDING It sounds really good, it just the initial hard acceleration does it sound a bit funky.
My dad was impressed with my 7000# truck with a V10, which just had a exhaust system no chip or tuner vs his 5000# truck with the 5.4 V8. And I only have the 3.73 gears. His truck has only the 3.55's. If I had to do it over again I would gett he 4.10 or 30's. I opted for the 3.73 because of the highway miles I do, about 40% of my driving and I put 20K miles a year.

Whoa! Whered that come from? I love the V10 sound as well. I prefer the powerstroke sound over it. i live in northern British Columbia, minus 35 degrees celcius, it does sound different, but i dont know how u got expensive repairs from that. The 96' powerstroke has been through many, many, many cold start-ups, its still perfectly fine. Just dont be an idiot and bag the heck out of it imediately after u start it. This is the same with any engine out there. we are all ford guys here, so no need to fight amongst each other, right?

Whered that come from, well it comes from my tongue in cheek way of looking at life . If my attempt at injecting humour into my threads annoys you, then your path is clear, just don't respond to my threads. I' ll get over it. Wrench.
Sorry, didnt know you were being humorous. I've read a couple threads here and all you guys are bashing diesels, so i didnt really take a step back and look at what you were saying.
Well NickFordMan, you have my respect after your last post. I also apologize if I have offended you. I was a diesel guy for 11 years, love the 7.3 , hate the 6.0. do a search of my posts if you want to know why. Of course the diesel gets kicked around in here. This is the V10 Forum. I read in the diesel sections. I have heard V10s called worthless and other less than kind comments up there but that is their opinion and their place to put it.
I won't get into arguments with those guys in their forum. But if a diesel guy wants to take me on in the V10 Forum, the gloves are coming off LOL Take care, Wrenchtraveller
