I have a stock 69 with a 390 with a 4 speed transmission and what I think is a stock rear end but I am not sure and finally 225 70 15 tires. I really dont like this set-up (tranny and rear end) up because it feels like 2nd should be first and second should be third and so on, first gear is way to low for me. I have to start it in 2nd to get any speed off the line. I was wondering if anyone knew what the best rear end would be to match the reat of my set ie engine, tires, tranny. (wich I would like to keep, I like standards).
I am going to make a old school rat rod with it. I will drop it and paint flat balck with some scallops so I wan to keep my white wall tires just the size they are not change them.
I know plenty of people who have older fords with a 4 spd w granny, or granny 3 spd, whatever. Is your MPG between 10-16? If so, just don't use 1st unless you need lo, like snow, ice, mud,... You'll be fine.
On the other hand, if your MPG is between 6-10, find the axle ratio tag. It should have a number like 4.56, 4.11, whatever it is, go down 1/4, if it is 4.56, go to a 3.50 or something. If its 3.90 or taller, you'll have to swap the tranny.
Just remember, as your axle climbs higher, your grip goes away.
I believe the first gear is just a granny gear and is not ment to be used on the street, but i dont know a whole lot about truck 4 speeds. I just know on our 68 thats how it is.
You have a truck 4 speed - granny is only used when needed to start a heavy load; empty it is expected you would use second to start the truck moving.
You need a close-ratio 4 speed if you are going to race the truck - use all 4 forward gears with a shift pattern and shift throw that allows fast gear changes. You could also change it out for a C6 automatic trans - - -
