Smile Performance parts for 87 2.9 L V-6

I am in the middle of an engine rebuild for my 87 Ranger XLT 4X4 2.9 liter V-6. Where can I buy things such as headers and other performance parts?

Not too much you can do with that ECC, but camcraft makes computer friendly cams. JBA and Pace setter make headers. Usually you can find a decent deal on e-bay for headers. What else were you planning on doing? It might not be possible with the stock ECC.

performance parts for 87 2.9 liter v-6

I only plan on enhancing the exhaust system. The cat, muffler, etc are in poor condition and it is only a matter of time before the truck won't pass smog. The headers are necessary because of the bolts on the original exhaust manifold are rusted in place. If they can't be removed without destroying the manifold I will have to buy headers or OEM stuff. The OEM stuff is really expensive. Wrecking yard replacement manifolds would be an option also. I like the header option best if they are reasonably priced and legal in "Socialist Republik of Kalifornya".

Not sure on the legal stuff. Where I am from, emissions tests are not done... yet.. My truck is illegal and I'll be screwed when they do start emissions testing. You can get new manifolds usually from ebay. Sometimes you can find cheap ones:

Good luck on the exhaust manifold bolts. When I rebuilt my engine, I broke every single one off in the head. Luckily, my heads were cracked and I had bought brand new ones anyway.

Smile 87 ranger rebuild

I only broke a few of the manifold to head bolts. My heads had to be replaced also. The exhaust manifold bolts I can't remove are the other end where the manifold attaches to the exhaust pipe. I will look on ebay for exhaust headers, etc.

I had the same issue with the manifold -y pipe bolts.

I cut em off, drilled out the manifolds and replaced with nut & bolts.
Drilling the manifolds without a drill press is a challenge but can be done. Or you can drill and tap em for a standard thread bolt, cheaper than replacing them if $'s become a factor.
Good luck

Rich
