Cam for an 84 4x4 w/ a 351w

What do you guys think is the best cam to get for my 84 f150 4x4 w/ a 351w. I'm looking at either a crane or a comp. I have a 4bbw w/ an eldelbrock intake manifold and some hooker headers. I was just wondering if any of you guys have put aftermarket cams and which ones are the best ones. Thanks alot.

Comp Cams XTREME ENERGY 4x4 line of cams. www.compcams.com Pick a cam that operates in your driving rpm range.

I have a Weiand Stealth and a 4bbl, and there is a very big noticeable difference in performance, as well as getting 1 mpg better fuel economy.

I really like the comp cam's Extreme 4x4 grinds. We had one in my buddy's 84 F150(engine was an 83 2bbl out of a van, stock heads and bottom end, Comp Extreme 4x4 270H, Edelbrock Performer intake, headers, 650 CFM Edelbrock carb) and it pulled good and hard, good bottom end(truck had 3.50 gears and 35's, and would still kick Hemi tail,) good top end, and a livable idle(truck was 4 speed though) Unfortunatley, his affinity with the skinny pedal and lack of a rev limiter made it drop 2 connecting rods about 3 weeks after we put it in the truck.
I've yet to pull it apart. If the cam is salvageable, it's going in the 87 351W that's going in my 81.

The 270H is a Magnum cam grind, not the XTREME ENERGY 4X4 line of cams. Go look it up in the online catalog. All of the XTREME ENERGY 4X4 cam grind #'s start with the letter X.

I can't blame your friend, I too have an affinity with the go pedal. I have to watch the tach everytime I shift.

What I meant was the 270 grind in the Xtreme 4x4 range, the x4270H

I was like that at one time... Then I started driving my 460... the higher the RPM's, the less fuel in the tank... LOL

Okay. I'm glad you clarified that on the cam.

I had a big block chevy that got better fuel economy than my 351W. Now that I think about it, I'm not comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges. The Chevy was a 1/2 ton truck (2 wheel drive)of the stepside variety and the Ford is an extended cab longbed 4X4. The Ford has more weight to move.

its nice to match the cam to the intake and then consider which rockers you will be using. For example look at Edelbrock performer & performer RPM intakes and the cams they have to match. Keep in mind you should use roller rail rockers up to about .480 lift. As you approach .500 you should be thinking about adding guilde plates and hardened pushrods-gets expensive. I went with the Edlebrock Performer intake and cam - 448/472, 204/214 and comp cams steel roller rail rockers. Used some '70 heads with 3/8 studs, makes a nice combo. Good low end and mid but all done by 5000 rpm. Still passes NY emmissions. Keep in mind the more high revs it can make the less low end pull it will have. Its a trade-off. The same motor in a Mustang I would have gone higher lift cause you don't have the weight to pull off the line. Good Luck!
