Hello People,

I've recently moved down to the Calgary area from Grande Prairie and I'm looking to meet up with some local area hunters.
The season is coming up fast and I'd like to get to know some folks down here that have been having regular success with Moose and Elk hunts.
I'm not interested in guides in any way shape or form, just good 'ol hunters.

I'd appreciate any/all positive replies...

I'll take it you're 'in the know' about these things are you ? Are you a hunter yourself ?
How far is Innisfail from Sundre ?, I know Sundre is about an hour 'n a half from Calgary.

Innisfail is just outside of red deer (south side, about 10-15 minutes away), but i don't hunt myself, never really had the time with hockey and school projects, but there's good elk hunting in the writing on stone lease and in and around that area down there (its down by the us border)

 

I lived in Calgary all my life except for 2 years.
No I shoot with a camera.

I knew a few Hunter's in Calgary but a lot of those guys kept to themselves.

I have been around Sundre,Rocky,Caroline,etc long enough to know the guys that hunt all seem to know each other.

I know a couple here in Innisfail that hunt but they both got snookered this last fall.

You could always visit a good sporting goods store to see if there are any hunting clubs in Calgary.
Or even search the net for Central Alberta people.

I hunt in the Drumheller area. mostly in wmu156. We have had sucessful moose hunts in the area. Also we have been elk hunting neer Rimby. Mostly though we get monster mule deer.

Thanks for the note. I'm really partial to mountain and foothill hunts myself.
I'm looking at WMU(s) 402, 410, 412, 414, 416. Uhm, I'm guessing Rocky Mtn area and south to Crowsnest.
I hear the Elk hunting around sundre, rimbey isn't to bad though. This will be my first time to put in draws in AB (I suppose I'd better get a good idea for where I want to go before the end of May), I've always hunted up in N/E BC, Peace River country.

 

I have never hunted in the mountains. I wouldn't know where to go. The elk is good aroumnd rimby. My Dad shot a cow elk there about 3 years ago on a partner draw,or whatever you call them. Tasty little heifer.

 

..and like yourself, I've never hunted the flat-lands. I suppose it would be alright, long shots though I'm sure. One of the reasons I prefer the mountains (foothills) is because the game always come down to graze the farmers fields and such during the late summer and fall. That's one of the reasons why they're so yummy.
The camping and exploring is always nice up in the foothills too...

 

Yeah but flat land deer are mostly grain fed and very fat. The long shots are a challenge. Ive shot more that one deer at 400 yards. And the land around drumheller is extremely interesting, broken with coulees andsloughs ans such. I love it. We hunt in a 10 mile radius from my Grandmas house and between the three of us (my dad and uncle and I) we usually get 4-6 deer. Cheep, good meat. And hard to find white tail bucks. A challenge. I'd like to try hunting in the foothills tho, for a different experience.

 

I hear you there, grain feds are always tastier. My older brother is big on Deer too. Myself, I prefer the foothills game for both palets, the Elk, and the Moose, they're grain fed right up to season opening (just not as heavily I think), and they've got the wild grazing in them to. The same as the Dear you guys are hunting. You can get 350/400yd shots in the hills to. The only difference on the shot would be windage and the p.i.t.a. efffort to get them out and onto the truck.
I've always hunted with my brother up north, up in the Peace River, FortStJohn areas, and always successful. We usually take two b/moose and an elk each season, then we split it all up with the family and enjoy.
To tell you the truth, I like the fact that I take my little truck out and put it through it's paces that's probably the real draw for me.

 

I see white tail bucks quite often back home on the farm .
