Overdrive light/transmission

My name is John and i drive a 99 f-150 4x4 4.6l. Just resently i noticed that my overdrive light started to blink. I also noticed that when driving it shifts rougher than normal, and when braking it seems to be making a clanking noise. I took it to a local mechanic to get checked out and he said that nothing was wrong with transmission, that the shifter where the light is needs to be replaced to stop the light from blinking. He said it would not hurt anything to just put a piece of black tape over the light and ignore it, so that is what i am currently doing. I was curius if anyone had and suggestions on what i should or should not do .
Anything would help
Thank You

A blinking OD light is like a check engine light, it means something is wrong. Go to a transmission shop and see if they can read the code with their diagnostic scanner.
If you have noticed a change in shifting and have abnormal noises, I would not tape over it and ignore it.

The blinking light indicates a transmission malfunction adn as far as the rougher shift that is because when the transmission detects a problem it swithes to a higher pressure in the transmission which causes the rough shifting. I would take it to a transmission shop ASAP and get it fixed, because there is a problem. Mine was doing that and it ended up being a 2-3 solenoid piston and a shift light, $250 with a tranny flush and new fluid and filter.
