Ok this subject came up at our meeting the other night…<O</O
The Alaska Chapter is putting together a website and one of the suggestions brought up for it was a “breakdown list” containing the names and phone numbers of those members willing to help out one of our own if we were to breakdown in your neck of the woods.<O</O
This is strictly a voluntary thing and the list would be published on our website so if you are comfortable with that and want to be listed, just email me with your info and I will put it up.
This is kinda what I had in mind for it to look like...<O</O
Whether this page actually makes it to the website will depend on the response I get here.
i think it is an AWESOME idea... but at the same time- while i feel that FTE has the best members of any website on earth, many of us give out our personal living situations, details of posessions such as vehicles, hunting rifles and so on in the General Conversation forums... that its possible that some "bad apples" out there may use it for bad purposes. like i said, awesome idea but it may lead to a bad event
That was my first thought too BT, when the idea was brought to me. However I think we can work it somehow so that most of that can be eliminated.
Perhaps if we listed just first names and phone numbers? Most of us know each other by our membernames anyway so if we made the list with just first names and phone numbers that would cut out a vast majority of the privacy issues you expressed. You could call a number close to where your broke down at and ask for the person by first name and then go from there.
Well I live no where near Alaska(thankfully, because I the cold!) but with that google feature you can type in anyones phone numer and get a map quest to where they live. Might hurt the whole privacy thing a bit. Although I have noticed that cell phones don't come up so that could be an idea.
Although I would hope that all people on FTE are trustworthy,I feel that there is still the potential for something to wrong.
It's a Heck of an idea though.
In Fact, This idea has been discussed by FTE Administration and FTE USER's Security was at the top of the list of concerns.
There are an ENORMOUS amount of security risks at bay here.
I'm thinking the only way this may work is if ClubFTE members plan their trip accordingly then contact the people who would show up in their map-out of their trip.(ie: Like If I was headed for Missouri and took certain roads to get there & let every one know along that route that " I's a Comin' "watch for me.)
This even has the potential to go bad for someone ,even for me as a Canadian visitor 1500 miles from home.
Hmmm,You got me thinkin here.I know, kinda scarey huh!But anyway, what about an 800 number.Heck,I would even be willing to man it!It would work like this. You break down, you call 1-800-xxx-xxxx,and then I would contact the closest member to where you are and ask them to help you.The members that wanted to join in on this would give me their ph# and the city they live in,That way nobody would be giving out info to strangers.Well at least nobody stranger than me!
heavenbound- while at work today i realized that i seemed to just straight out shoot down your idea. im sorry, i just felt it was important to lay out the worries.
heres an idea i had which is sort of mentioned above by Mil1ion- there could be a "travel" board, and someone could post their plans and route, and ASK on the board if anyone along the route could help if the case arose- and then who ever felt comfortable to doing so could email / personal message the person planning the trip their contact info.
i just worry about the idea of having so many names / numbers / adresses available to anyone at any given time.
I still like the 1-800-FTE-HELP idea.
Hello,this is KT,how can I help you?
Yeah,KT,This is heavnbound and I am broke down on the highway right outside of inver grove heights.Im in a white 2003 F150,
Ok,hang on and let me see if I can get you some help.
Hello,BuilttoughF250(ok so I would need a first name)this is KT,heavnbound is broke down right outside of your town, can you help him.
Builttough,Yup,Im on my way!
Badaboom badabing, nobody gave any personal info out to strangers.
king- thats a cool idea. what would be the cost of a 1-800 number though? maybe ask for donations from the people who use it... like a buck a call ? id be more than willing to help someone, as long as i were available
Yeah,I think the whole concept is a good idea, heck thats why I said I would do the phone operations.I dont know if an 800 number is expensive or not,but even a regular number would work, the benefit of the 800 number would be that if they had to use a payphone and did not have the correct change,or some other reason why they could not just dial direct.
We have some good ideas going here. K.T. I understand completely about the privacy issues...I, myself, was the victim of identity theft once and while it worked itself out, it was a scary few days till it did! So I am fully aware of folks hesitation in giving out personal info!
I like the 1-800 idea I don't know how much an 800 number would run (maybe someone else on FTE does) but I'd be willing to work a shift at it as well.
The travel board is also a good idea maybe we can come up with a travel forum to post our plans and even a map of the major highway routes in the US/Canada so we can get an idea of who we might get in touch with along the way.
This has been brought up before and has some merit but there are definitely some security concerns. I might suggest if you plan a trip then post or email and let the chapter leaders know that you will be in their area. Most leaders I would assume have a general knowledge of their area and who could assist if needed. Just my 2-cents anyway.
