i have a 04 6.0 4wd with a banks six gun programer on 40" tires and just redid the gearing with 5.13's. it is now making a loud whining noise when i get on the gas and i really don't feel the difference in power. it actually felt better stock! im told that i need to reprogram the computer so that it recognizes the different gearing. is this true? is it safe to drive with this whining noise?
If you only hear the whining noise when stepping on the diesel, that would be the pretty sound of a turbo spooling up.
Did you do an exhaust with the Six-Gun?
With the gearing change(even with the larger tires) your drivetrain will be spinning over a little bit faster than stock.
It could be the back lash in the gears.....only thing you changed was the gears, if it was not there before and is now..........go to the last thing you changed
Since your sure its coming from the rear diff...Do you have limited Slip? Is the noise you hear associated with turning the vehicle and stepping on the accelerator? When you re-lubed did you use gear oil that has friction modifiers?

a gear whine on accel means pinion depth is too deep(too far in), 99% of the time. who did ur gears? they probably made the newbie mistake of just re-installing the old pinion shims and not setting the depth. taller gears mean higher ring teeth, and pinion depth has to be adj accordingly. whine on coast means too shallow or backlash is too wide.
i have done many gear swaps on 8.8's........sounds like someone took previous install experience for granted, and ASSumed all would be well with reusing shims.
also, what i have found, decel while, too much backlash, accel whine, too little....all time whine, pinion depth way off......
with every install i have done that a whine was present, the pinion depth was never an issue, as that was setup correctly (i actually measure )...... but backlash, it is a pita on some vehicles, especially if you do not have a good assortment of shims....
get it fixed, cuz in a super duty, with a bed, the backlash, or pinion depth would have to be pretty far off to even hear. in a stang, it is alot easier, since they are quieter, and alot closer to the drivers ears.....
who did the swap? and was it a "too good to be true" type price???
