A few years ago I had a subscription to a 4x4 magazine. One article covered bench seats (pun intended). There was a company called Bycobra who made bench seat covers with side and leg bolsters. Has anyone else heard of them
or are they still in business? Anyone ever use their products? I did a search on google, but could not come up with anything.
I was looking at the seat covers in my LMC book. They're nice and I may even use them. I was hoping to find seat covers with bolsters in them for back support.
Did you consider a newer seat. I have a seat from a '91 F150 XLT in my '73, it's contoured like two buckets with head rests and a fold down center arm rest. Some of them even came with power lumbar support. It cost me $150 from the salvage yard - bench seat up to '96 will work. Took me 20 minutes to install, just use old seat tracks on new seat and it will bolt right in.
You know, that's a great idea. I wasn't sure what seats from newer trucks would fit ours w/o modification. Thanks . I'm sure they are a lot more comfortable than our older seats.
The only bolt in swap is a bench style (one piece bottom) up to '96. But these bench seats are contoured like buckets, so they are very comfortable and a simple swap. The split bench seats can be made to work, but require fabricating custom mounts - not as easy as the full bench. I'm very pleased with mine, $150 in perfect shape, and even makes the ride better (not so much bounce...).
I have to agree with 73custom. I put a '90 xlt seat in my '76 and was surprized that the old sliders bolted right on to the newer seat. No work at all. I had the seat already so I spent some money and had the thing re-upholstered to match my '76. Looks great and so much more comfortable!
Yeah, I think this is what I'll be doing. Maybe sell my old seat to help cover the cost.
Don't get me wrong, I like bench seats, but I want something that will hold me
when I'm driving. If it were practical(read affordable) I would throw in some
Recaros.
Do any of these have the lap shoulder belt intergrated into the seat?? I want to get 3 point belts, just have lap now. Also what about leg room. I am 6' and weight 250 lbs. Are these seats comfortable for a person like myself?
Does all of these have a middle seat??
I know that the '90 xlt seat does not have interagal shoulder belts. I assume the same is true for seats up to 96 that will fit but I'm not 100% sure. I used the existing shoulder belts on my '76, They fit right into the '90 buckle that I kept because it has the molded plastic casing that holds it uprite all the time. Makes it a little easier to find when you buckle up.
The seat is a tru bench and will hold three people. The centre of the backrest has a wide fold down armrest that can be used when there is no middle passenger. Because the driver and passenger section of the bench are higher(like a bucket seat) they hit the back wall/window sooner than the standard low back bench so you loose an inch or two of leg room. I'm 5'10'' and can't drive with the seat all the way back anyway. I think a guy your size will be fine . I find the seat very supportive and comfortable. Anything more than an hour and half on the old tired bench seat I had gave me a lot of back pain. This one is great on long drives or sitting in traffic forever!
I have to agree with FP_5, too long in my old bench seat and my shoulders get a terrible pain in them. I'm only 24 and too young for this crap. Not only that, I have a bit of a lead foot in the corners, and my passengers(wife) complain about being thrown around.
