1994 Explorer Stalls While Driving

I have a 1994 Explorer that stalls while driving without warning intermittently, 3 or 4 times a month, for the last year or so. It does not sputter, surge or hesitate, it just shuts down, the electrical system is still operative, radios, lights, starter and such. After a couple minutes I am able to restart the engine and it is perfect until the next time it shuts down. It seems that I am losing ignition or fuel totally for a brief period. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you pulled the codes. There may be intermittent codes that are getting stored that could help you trace the problem out. I doubt that it's fuel since you say it cuts off quickly. When I pulled the fuel pump fuse in order to relieve the pressure on the fuel system of my '92, I was amazed at how long the engine kept running. It went on for approximately 1 minute at idle.

I didn't see a check engine light so i didn't think any codes were being generated or stored. Is it difficult to read the codes?

Just 'cause the check engine light doesn't come on doesn't mean there are no codes. Easiest way to read them is with a reader. However, since it's a '94 it'll be OBD I and you can read it using the procedures found here;
http://dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

Or, you may be able to get a local parts store to read them for nothing in hopes of selling you parts that may be found bad.

My 91 did something similar... it tended to die when I got off the gas approaching stop signs. The problem was solved by replacing the spark plug wires, which had apparently broken down. It runs much better now.

This may or may not help in your case, but worth a mention.

Good Luck

I had a similar problem, drove me nuts. Turns out the fuel fill pipe at the quarter panel was rusted through, allowing sand and dirt into the fuel tank. Ihad to drop the tank and clean it and the filter on the tank. This worked for about 2 weeks and it started over again. I dropped it again friday to find the filter not flowing enough again, so I removed some of the fiber in it so that the filter is just a screen. The inline filter should catch any thing that gets in the tank. Oh BTW I did braze the holes in the pipe.

I had the smae problem with my 94 Explorer. Turned out to be the Mas Airflow sensor. I just took mine off and cleaned it with some prake cleaner spray and let it dry good. then put it back in and it ran like a dream. Hope this helps.

my 96 explorer 4wd 4L would die while making a hard left turn such as into a parking space or a driveway once or twice during our hot texas summers. we had that truck for six years and 112 thou miles and never did figure what the problem was. after a few minutes the truck would start and run like normal. no trouble codes displayed or stored. i guess it was a quark of that vehicle.
