removing front rotors on 98 explorer AWD

I need to turn down or replace a rotor. I took off the caliper and two bolt holding bracket. It doesnt come off. Is it stuck or is the rotor part of the wheel assembly requiring hub removal. Any experienced help would be appreciated.

Rotor is just rusted to the hub, just tap it with a hammer. It may take some persuading. If its that stuck you'll probaly end up trashing it,when you replace it put neverseize around the hub and also on the rotor that will keep that from happening

jer1234,
It sounds to me like you haven't taken the center hub nut off?? If you haven't...that will need to come off before you can remove your rotor. If it's anything like my 94 you'll need to remove a small key between the shaft and the nut before the nut can be removed. You can purchase a Chiltons or hayens manual at your local parts store for about $16.00 dollars. It saves a lot of headaches!!

If you do have the rotor turned, make sure you have them both turned. The thickness needs to be the same so you don't have it pulling to one side when you break. My advice would be to replace both fronts. They only cost about $50 to $60 dollars each.

On my 97 AWD (which I think is the same as the 96) there is no need to remove the center nut at all. The rotor is only held in by the wheel. Once you get the caliper and the caliper mounting braket off (for clearance) all you need to do is persuade the rotor off (I used a big rubber mallet) and then install the new one in it's place. If you remove the center nut I am sure that you will be on your way to removing the whole hub/bearing assembly (which are integral in this vintage AWD models) and you do not want to do that.

Thanks, I don't want to cause jer1234 anymore more maintenance than needed but I didn't want him to break anything either. I'm glad you said something. On my 94 I have to pull everything off and then i have to swap out the bearing races if the rotor didn't come with them. Maybe I need to get a new FORD.....not!! 200.000 on the 94 and still running strong. She's a keeper:-)
