I must say that this neon/ballast 3rd brake light design by Ford is incredibly stupid. I can't pass MA state inspection unless I get this fixed. Frustrating cause these parts are expensive new. Uugh! I was gonna open up the light housing and put in some cheap leds in there but it's not that easy to get open. Anyway...
Anyone know how I can test the ballast to see if it is ok?
High-mount brake lights on Gen III (2002-up) Explorers use W5W bulbs; if it's the same size as yours (you didn't say what year you have), you could swap light assemblies and wire it direct, bypassing the ballast.
I have the same year with the same problem.
I bought BOTH. I really only needed the ballast.
I think the ballast was about 80.00 dollars from the Ford parts network
Removing the rear tailgate plastic cover exposes the ballast.
It is a black box about 8 inches long near the top of the tail gate.
I first changed out the bulp and no workie. Most posters here say its the
ballast.
In answer to your question........I do not know how to test it.
Seems like a bite the bullet and replace it item to me.
