Ign. module problem

A few years ago my 79 started getting hard to start and just not running right. It acted like a power valve in the carb.I noticed the module had stuff running out from under it and took it off to find the heat sink stuff on the back was melting so I put a new module on it and it ran great.I noticed last summer that the module had stuff running out from under it again. What would make the module obviously overheat?I checked voltage going into it thinking maybe the old wiring was bad and not giving enough voltage but it's getting 12 volts.

Does your module get too hot to touch under normal operation? One thing you could check is the ground inside the distributor. The coil - goes to ground thru the module and back thru the black wire of the 3 pin connector of the distributor. If there is resistance in this circuit, I guess the current thru the module would go up, which would cause more heat. Usually if that happens the coil goes first. Sometimes the ground between the dist. and block can be a problem, usually in a older motor where the dist. may not have been out of the engine in a long time. What ever it ends up to be will be strange. It would have to be real hot to start melting. Hope this helps...Don

Have a look at my pic on post#5 on this thread.

See how the module sits about 1/4" away from the inner fender?

Does your sit that far away or is the back mounted flush with the inner fender ?

If so create a space by using washers to make a space back there.

I'll try spacing the module out.It fastens right against the inner fender just the way it was when new(my dad bought the truck new).I'll also check the ground like somebody posted here.I thought maybe the coil was creating too much resistance and changed it but all of the coils I have in the garage check the same with the meter.

I can't tell what the problem is but high resistance causes more heat. In order for current to go up theres a short somewhere. A short makes a parallel path for flow. The total resistance of the circuit is lower than its lowest leg, and thus current is increased. This could cause more heat. The coil should have nothing to do with the module getting warm. I would try some spacing as million said although i don't have any either.
