Dang only 37k on it now and already the tranny is acting funny. started yesterday when i was at a stop and took off, all of a sudden the tranny wouldn't shift into 2nd until about 5k rpm. wow shocked i checked again and shure enough the tranny wouldn't shift into 2nd even if i let my foot off of it it seemd like it is in neutral, then shifts kinda hard, then shifts into 3rd then right away into overdrive. by the time i got near home and at another stop i heard a clunk and seek like some thing had just fallen off or broken loose. but when i got home and crawled underneath, there was nothing loose or hanging, checked all the linkage, lines and wiring, now gotta take it to the dealer so they can keep through the weekend to dael with it, anyone else have a similar problem>?
What year model truck to you have? If you have the old 4R100 tranny my bet would be it is heading south! Drain the oil, check for metal particles in pan. If you find a lot you best go a head and bit the bullet and replace it.
Watch you are describing I would have it checked out. I only had 12,000 miles on my 99 powerstroke when the transmission went south. Your story kind of reminds me the way mine started acting before it blew! The 4R100 transmission was not of Fords better ideas. Pull you transmission dipstick and smell the fluid. If it is burnt and discolored that would be sure sign of problems a head.
I still own one Ford Product, a E450 Motor Home with the V10 that I am scared to death the plugs are going to blow out. I know of so many V10's that have had the spark plug blow out problem. It amazes me that Ford would look the other way do nothing about it.

Tranny fluid looked ok, wasn't bright red but looked some what red, smelled like tranny fluid not burnt, no metal shavings on the stick, just going to let the dealer look at it, hope the extended warrantes takes care of it.
A method one dealer showed me when you pull the dipstick use a white clean cloth and see what shows when the stick is wiped off. I was surprised to see the fine stuff you would not necessarily see. Do you have any idea when the tranmission was serviced last?
Extended warranty should be ok providing you can show records of servicing habits. I have found some times even after you pay big money for the extended warranty they will balk and try to find some excuse not to pay a claim. Read the fine print closely and be prepared.
Well i have only had the truck for about 31/2 weeks now and it only had 35k on it when i drove it home , i had planeed on an oil change at 38, it has 37 now. other than that i assume the dealer i got it from did a minor service. not sure
Mine did the same thing at 65K and it was the sensor on the rear diff. $37.50 (covered by my EW) and it was fixed and haven't had a problem since, now 106K. Don't get to wound up, I thought that the tranny went on mine because it jerked, bounced and acted like it was in nuetral and all over again and was certain that it was done. Let them look at it and if it is burned, then get mad HAHA
I had similar problems with my '01 F250 CC that has the 4R100. I posted the same question here and it was suggested to replace the VSS in the rear diff. Well, long story short, I replaced the VSS and had the tranny flushed as well per the recommendation of a dealership, neither of which worked. Ultimately I had to have the tranny replaced, that put a hurtin on the ole wallet. Didn't put a stock one back in though. With the supercharger installed I wanted something more heavy duty and something heavy duty I got. Hopefully the VSS works for you or it is something simple, tranny's aren't cheap.
well the dealer said i lost 2nd gear, dont know how i'm not realy a romper hmm oh well good news is that the extended warranty is going to cover the whole thing! woohoo! about 3200 bucs for a refurb tranny. warranty people said they would rather replace it than rebuild it. thats ok with me. the thing i heard rattlin around underneath was the 2nd gear braking apart inside the tranny. so this one problem has alrerady paid for my warranty! wow now i tell the wife it was worth the extra bucks.
I am so happy for you. I was wondering how you would come out on the problem. I just felt from the way you described it was the transmission. Be sure to ask them to flush out or change out the transmission oil cooler in the process. All those metal shavings get caught up in the oil cooler and if it isn't least flushed they can move out into your knew transmission and shorten the life.
I had problems after the dealer changed out my transmission with only 12,000 miles on it. They did not replace the oil cooler, frankly doubt they flushed any thing, and at 20,000 miles I was having shifting problems again. Lucky me I was able to sell the the thing before it fell a part again.
