351w build recipe for '68 EB

Hello, I know that this has been beat, but...
I am looking to build my roller block 351w for my Bronco. It will have a zf 5spd, porb. 4.10 gears and has a 3.5" lift. It is a daily driver/trail machine. I am looking for about 400 lb/ft of torque and 350-375 hp. This is a low buck build. I have a pair of e5 heads off of my '86 351w ho block that I could use, but was thinking of some gt40's or p's (low $$$) and maybe home porting. I know the p's need special headers, I don't care. Will these be good enough for my application? I have a Performer manifold and Q-jet, but will prob. go EFI or Stealth. I don't plan on stroking it either. Does anyone have a good recipe for me?

first off budget and hp dont mix. now with that said. some gt40Y heads would be nice the e5's are not desierable and would be better off with some e7's ported. efi would give you better drive ablility for sure and would also help get to your hp/trq mark. I would call comp cam and let them help select something for your application. of course youll need headers get some good ceramic coated ones . im sure more will chim in

good luck

I have a recipe for you. However, it uses Edelbrock heads. It desk top dyno'd at 391 lbs/ft of torque @ 4000 rpm's and 343 horsepower @ 5000 rpm's through mufflers under SAE conditions. Here are the components: Edelbrock Performer heads with 1.90 intake / 1.60 exhaust. Comp Cams XTREME 4X4 camshaft part #35-235-3 cam grind # X4254H, duration @ .050 Intake 210 / Exhaust 218, valve lift w/1.6 rocker Intake .477 / Exhaust .493. Lobe separation angle is 111 degrees. Roller rockers. A Holley Truck Avenger 670 cfm carburetor. Keith Black Silvolite pistons (hypereutectic 22cc cup). Compression is 8.91. 160 degree thermostat. Run the cam straight up, or 4 degrees retarded. There is 4 degrees advance built into the cam.

Try www.buyfrodracing.com and look for take-off heads. They are heads that are taken off of engines. They are unused, but can't be sold as new since they were bolted onto an engine. You can get some great heads for cheap. Power and inexpensive do not exist. You have to spend some money.

Thanks for the replies, I can see that would be cheaper than getting some rebuilt. Couple questios after looking at the site:
1. What is better for a truck application? they Y or X
2. Any other costs of assembling these?
3. What compression should I run with aluminum heads (I know it can be higher)?
4. Any detriments to running these in my truck?
5. If I could get a holf of a set of World Sr.'s for about $550 would these be a better choice, or are they too big?

Thanks...

the x out flow the Y which would decrease your torque output at lower rpms. for a truck this is not desired. think torque and at low rpm's and you will have a great motor for your rig

Don't get the SR heads. First of all, they have to be ported. If you don't port them they don't flow well. You would be better off with the Jr's.

Get the Y heads.

Don't over heat the engine and everything will be fine.

If your engine is carbureted keep the compression around 9 and you should be fine.
At 8.91 on my engine if I had gone higher it would be pinging.
