I have a 97 4x4 ext cab w/ the 4.6. The truck has about 155000 miles and recently started to purge antifreeze from the cap. Found out it has a bad head gasket and am having a new motor installed. I was a little upset to have this problem with only 155000 miles, but then again the motor is 11 years old. I occasionally pull a 3 horse trailer(4-5k lbs loaded max) and get a couple round bails of hay on an 18ft flat trailer(3k lbs loaded max). The truck does pretty well with both trailers, but a 5.4 would be a little better. Other than the head gasket, the motor has had no hiccups.

97dave, not a dis or anything, more of a technical curiosity, but did you keep the coolant changed every 2 years?

sorry for the delay...i took over complete maintenance of this truck @ about 30k miles. I followed the owners manual and had the coolant system serviced accordingly, I do not think it was every 2 years, more like every 3. I cahanged the hoses at 125k and had the coolant flushed and changed then. i replaced the radiator early this year and again flushed the coolant and replaced. I used the type of coolant recommended by ford. Could something having to do with the coolant have caused my problem?

I can't say for sure, but if you needed a radiator, that's an indicator that something was not right. Why did you need a radiator? Did it leak or did it clog up?

Solid

I have a Ď97 f150 with the 4.6 triton v8 and so far itís been solid. Always reliable and seems to be pretty damn tough! New battery and alternator put in last night now she fires up twice as fast! Love it I just wish it was a 5.4

I had a 350,000 mile 1997 4.6. 0 major issues for those miles. Small issues: exhaust studs are too small and tend to fail over time, starter shunt corrodes through requiring a new starter, COP failures, EGR passage plugs up, vacuum elbow on rear of intake cracks/rots, occasional head gasket that leaks coolant, and it's pretty common for them to use oil. For the last 250,000 miles I had it, my 4.6 used about 1qt every 1000 miles, but this caused zero issues.
