need help with fuel filter

Hi, I have a 88 f 250 7.3 diesel. I bought a new fuel filter and it looks like the right one, kinda like an oil filter. It doesn't look anything like it explains in my haynes manual, it has some plastic black piece screwed in the botton of the filter. What is this? How do I properly remove filter and put new in?

you should have a throw away cannister. There is a thinner, round o ring on the bottom to seal the lower cap to the cannister and fill the cannister with clean fuel, screw it to the filter mount and make sure the o ring is on the top of the cannister. Snug it up after contact. Doesnt have to be reeeeel tight. The lift pump will produce about 7 psi and it will leak if its not tight or an o ring missing. Good luck.

If it is like mine, (94) it will be a spin on type. On the bottom of the filter is a flange that has the 'water drain' (just a tube) and the 'water sensor' with a push on type connector. You will have to remove these first. Then just replace the flange, fill with clean fuel, and replace. Not to tight, remember the psi is around 7. Replace the drain tube and water sensor wire. Should be good to go. DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE FOR LONGER THAN 30 sec AT a TIME. Starters are real $$$$$$$.

I think they mean to pour a little clean fuel in the new filter.
