e150 99 5.4 can't shift out of park with engine running i have to turn key and not start the engine to shift out of park and then i can start it in neutral to drive. any help would be great
Check the fuse for the brake light switch wiring. I have read of wires breaking at the switch. You may also check the brake light fuse. If the brake lights don't work, neither will the shifter release.
A little off topic here but when I got my new 150 the first problem I had was that I could get it out of park. Not realizing you had to put the brake in first to do that. I didnt know what the heck was wrong. Called the dealer and he informed me about it. I thought sure there was something wrong.
One tip to remember if you don't have a fuse handy to replace it with, is turn the ignition switch to the unlock position, then shift it to neutral, and then start it, then you can put it in drive or reverse, that will bypass the safety shift interlock switch. my fuse popped when i was at the boat dock and the trailor wiring popped the fuse.
