Is it possible or practical to put a snow plow on a van that doesnt have 4 wheel drive? I was thinking of using my truck to make a few extra bucks working for a snow removal company.
I've never seen a plow on a van...there must be a reason for it.
I am thinking that without 4WD I would probably just spend the day spinning my wheels. Please advise.
That would be to see. However I think you correct in thinking that you would be just spinning your wheels. To put the time and $ in to putting a blade on a 1/2 2wd van would not be money ahead venture. Not saying it's impossible - just not recommended. You will need chains and a posi rear end. Even then - better have a 4X4 as back -up, to pull you out since you will have contracts on clearing snow by such and such time.
It would be cheaper to buy a beater 3/4 ton 4X4 and put it on that.
There are lightwieght plows that you can put on your van either on the front or even on the back utilizing a receiver hitch. Do a Google search for lightweight snowplows. I should warn you that these are really designed for the home owner to clear his driveway and not necessarily for commercial work.
Depending on the weight of the snow and the particular plowing situation, 4x4 isn't all that necessary. Realize that weight plays an important role. Also 4 wheel drive only really helps you get started, once you're moving it is the momentum that pushes the snow. Look at how many highway plow trucks are 4x4. Not a lot, eh? See...But if you're doing small parking lots and tight driveways, well then your best bet is to find an solid old Ford with solid axles, get an old plow, or better yet find a truck with one already on it. I don't know where you live but here in Mass. they are a dime a dozen. Depending on mother nature you can recoup the intial buy in cost your first season!!
Not a great idea. I grew up in PA and never once did I see a van with a plow. And yes 4x4 helps alot, had a 78 with a plow needed the 4x4 alot to get the snow to start movin'.
