Not to rub anyone the wrong way, but i have 9,000 mile on my 2004 SCREW Lariat truck now, and the 5.4 in my truck is pretty quiet. Quieter than the 5.4 in my 97 Expedition ever was.

I agree. If I'm inside the truck, I can tell it's running by the tach and if I'm outside in the front, I can hear the fan wind noise.

i also have an 04 f150 lariat screw with the 5.4 engine. this engine is driving me nuts with that knock and valve rattle. only does it when idling and hot. i hear it more on the passenger side where the cab and bed meets when i walk around the truck. it increases with rpm if you listen closely. i have 2900 miles on it. i'll take mine to the dealer also.

Triton V8 Enging noise

Triton V8 noise---My wife's 04 F150 is being repaired for an engine knock/tick right now. Our service rep informed us that there is a TSB out for the Triton V8 camshafts. We have waited three weeks for parts though, so, make sure the shop has the parts before taking your truck in for repair.

rlbrady,(Triton 5.4 engine noise)
I appreciate the feedback on the TSB. I recently ran the tank almost empty and topped off with a different Amoco Station. I chose an Amoco Station that was really busy and one that I knew had new tanks and pumps. For some reason my knock has faded away but you can still faintly hear it if you listen for it. I'm thinking these engines are extremely sensitive to fuel brands. So far, Exxon and Amoco seem to be the 2 gasolines the truck likes to run on. I just had the serpentine belt changed today for squeeking. Advisor said Ford is trying a different belt for the 5.4. It is made of a really sticky rubber. Not only did the squeek go away, but the engine is more quiet. I dont get it. How does a new belt seem to make the engine sound quieter or is it just me.

My fathers '04 5.4 is horrible. The gas mileage is terrible, It has the tick and knock, and the engine is always "roaring" when driving down the road. I acn't hardly hear my '97's 5.4.

What is the point of this statement. I am referring to an inanimate object that is mechanical which is made of components which as anyone who has worked on engines knows that they are never the same once you crack the seal. You need to consider what it is that you are reffering to or are you just trying to minimize my situation because you are the type that embraces your Ford regardless of the engineering screw ups inherent to their design. You need to read the rest of this thread to understand the magnitude of Fords problem. People put down their $'s for Fords latest and greatest just as I did.

They say it is not the cam phase sensor. Are there any tsb's on this? Other than this it is the nicest truck I have ever owned!!PLEASE HELP!!
wfofishing: There is the TSB that refers to Cam Phaser problem in this forum do a search for TSB Cam Phaser 5.4 and work your way through the pages until you come across it. Your dealer is blowing smoke to the degree of being dishonest. I wonder if we should not be sending our concerns directly to Ford, Maybe the Info is not being passed onto Ford as to how many of us are having problems!?

5.4 engine knock

OK, the knock is still there but faint. I give up on simple solutions for a problem that is probably a defect in materials or engineering. Ford is gonna have to fix this one. I paid too many $'s to hear this 04 F150 knock like it's got 200,000 miles on it and I just hit 3,000 miles. I have a clunking in the drive train also. I'll do my part and take it in for diagnostics. If they say it is normal and try blowing smoke at me, I'll put a for sale sign on it and start looking at TOYOTA TACOMA.
