I have a 1968 F100 4x4. Is it possible to put a flathead in it?
I heard an old flatty years ago and never seen or heard anything like it since.
Would be awesome to put one in!
If so what to look for in motor and trans?

 

Possible, but its only 100 hp and a '68 4x4 is heavy. You could enjoy the sound, but you won't like the performance. What trans do you have currently?

What do you look for? First would be to find a crack free flathead. That's sorta like the needle in the haystack. Be careful of ebay - lots of junk passes there.

and the flatty just wouldnt or couldnt have the power i wanted?

i'm currently taking a 360 and converting it to a 390, with hopes of about 4 to 450 horse power

 

How fast do you want to go? Next question is how deep are your pockets? Flatheads to rebuild stock are expensive. You can get close to 200 hp fairly reasonable $$-wise, but more than that will cost you. Headers, dual intake/carbs, cam, high compression heads, etc. - the usual hotrod upgrades can be had for 1-2 grand. Beyond that it gets expensive.

Forget the C6 - it eats about 65 hp just to get the wheels moving. C4 is better - check out Flat-O products. They have the adaptors to make the connections.

Flatheads are sweet sounding good running motors. I fondly remember the sound of the one in the old man's F6, with a 4 speed and 2 speed rear axle. All the way up to, gasp, 60 MPH.

Leave the flatty to a proper application.....

i have to agree here a flatie belongs in something 53 and older,maybe a 49 to 53 into some much older at the worse. has to be a flatie into a ford for me.immo
the sound well a flatie has it's very own sweet to this old timer
power no they never realie had it , there where a very lot of speed parts made but they are hard to find now.some company even made a set of ohv heads for them. good luck.

 

If you like the flathead, go for it. I recommend you consider a T5 transmission out of an S-10, Mustang, Camaro, etc., depending on the shifter position you need. There are several threads on this topic that you can find on this forum. Cornhusker makes a kit for this and there may be others. You can also make your own block to transmission adapter from 1" thick aluminum.
