Hey everyone. New member, but have been browsing the site for quite a while. Lots of great people and information on this site.
I have a question about a minor problem that my BII had when I bought it a few months ago.
There was a fairly loud, enough to be annoying, clicking sound coming from the passenger side kick panel. I asked the guy at the dealer about it, his mechanic said it was some kind of throttle position relay that has some emission purpose. It was clacking away badly, espescially when I let off the gas. Well, he was going to fix it, but I got him down in the price quit, so he said I would have to fix it myself. I went to a wrecker, got another one, it is in the kick panel, it is a little square box, about the size of a pill bottle, with wires coming out. I replaced it, started it up, it was doing the same thing. So I took it right out. I called the dealer back, asked his mechanic if I could run it without it in place, he said it wouldn't be a problem.
So I took it out, has been running perfectly since I got it. But still I wonder, what was that thing I took out, and is the fact that the replacement did the same a sign of something wrong, other than the relay?
Not really concerned, because it is running perfectly, but I am just curious if anyone else has had the same problem, or if there is a mechanic that could give me a little better explanation as to what this part does, and what not having it in will do(or not do), if anything.
Thanks.
By the way, it's an 84 Bronco II 4x4 2.8 mostly stock.

Reason: Missing info
I found on my 84 that whenever something "isn't right" with this prehistoric computer setup that the computer retaliates by screwing up your fuel mixture and timing.
DuraSpark this puppy! I did and the difference is amazing.
Yeah, that is what I was worried about, it screwing up my fuel ratio, timing, etc. But the fact that it is running flawlessly has me wondering if I really need to worry about it. If it was running rich, stalling, sputtering, getting really poor mileage(getting about 18mpg, which, from what I hear, is about as good as I can expect), I would do the Duraspark conversion. But as long as it is running well, I don't want to spend a bunch of money to fix something that isn't broken.
Is there a mechanic on the board that can tell me what this box is that I removed and what it is supposed to do?
Spoke too soon about it running well. For some reason the choke is stuck. Ran it for a while, engine was warm, when under load, it was sputtering, I could barely hold 60 going into a wind. Went home, popped the air breather, suspected carb was freezing up again, it wasn't, but the butterfly was closed. No ice, moves freely by hand, but will not open on its own. Will have to look at it further tomorrow. Going to get some carb cleaner and/or gas line antifreeze and spray the choke assembly down and hope for that to do the trick. If that doesn't do it, will have to take it somewhere. Something is goofy with the carb anyway. My high idle(cold) is at 1000 rpm's, when it warms up, it is at 1500, ie, backwards. I would try, but I know my limits, I don't know squat about carbs and their adjustments, would likely just make it run worse.
