I have been keeping an eye out for an FE motor. I have located one from a newspaper want ad. It is claimed to be a 64, (with transmission)is there any real benefit to the pre-emmisions era powerplants? This motor has been sitting and is out of the original vehicle. Longrange plans include a 428 crank and 410 pistons. What sould I be looking for on this motor/tranny
The FE engines are all pre-emmisions!!
Seriously, the only trouble with using a pre-'65 FE in a later vehicle is a change to the motor mount bosses on the block. It is easily corrected with some bolts and flat steel. You will want to check carefully for rust inside-has it been under cover? Can you see any cracks near the soft plugs? It would be worth the effort to pull the intake and heads to see what the inside looks like if they will allow it.
Is the trans a manual or auto?
Personally I think the early castings like the one your looking at are much better than the later. Smoother and overall better looking FWIW. A C4 casting number on block heads etc.. will tell you that it's a 64 engine.
If it has C4AE heads on it, they flow really well. I'd get it. Plus, the motor probably has good compression. (not the late low-compression truck motor)
Thanks guys for the input, just what I needed. I didn't count on buying anything right at the moment but this came up. I'm off this week and I'll grab it up if its still around.
