refresh me on K & N filters

Back in June I got a used 2001 F350 PSD, immediatly i went out and bought a k&n air filter for the stock air box. To my suprize, people on this web site strongly disapproved. I took it out right away. Now in need of an air filter, i am wanting to put in as long as i seal it real good with grease. What do you guys think?

I've had one for 183,000 miles with no problems!! Just put it in right and clean it every 20,000 miles and you will not have any problems with it!!

I ran an K&N in my '99 PSD for 60,000 miles & took it out for good. Way to much "dusting" was getting thru to the engine. Even with a well maintained 20,000 mile air filter the K&N still does not filter the fine dust, IMO.
If you live in a non-dusty driving area, then you shouldn't have any problems with Dusting of the inner-engine.

Never had a problem with the K&N back in my stock filter days. My uncle and two of my friends stil run the K&N panel.....I have had to use a bead of RTV around both sides of the seal to keep dust frm getting around the filter, but none of us have had a problem yet with the actual filter media.

Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm - it might help you decide if you want to run a K&N on the street. I use a K&N on my boat but would not use one for a daily driver; JMHO. Whether you run paper or oiled cotton/foam, it's a good idea to put silicone grease on the gasket area.
