Real scary thread here.
So do the damm pans rust from outside in?
Surely the oil pool inside prevents the opposite does'nt it? I mean is this rust or some type of internal corrosion from the oil additives or some such?

700 buck oil pan jobs ugh Ought to be a law..!

OK, welding this. Ideal would be purge the crankcase with argon or other gases enert. Drain oil and weld it up. That or put a small regular steel screw in the hole if that is all the size of problem you have. Then with the truck left over night where the welder is so that all is cooled down with oil in pan, stitch the pan up right over the screw head and all. Leave the oil in it too as this will help with getting things to hot. Don't burn through it so go easy and take your time. Clean area off of paint before you start too.

The deal is here the oil and residue in the area will make enough smoke and gases as it is welded to keep the flames out in such a tight confined space, so long as you don't burn into this or open up the system anymore than it already is. So leave the oil in her, cooled down and don't remove any oil fill cap or anything. Go at this easy and its no biggy. This is all if, big if too; you can get at the screw easy enough and see what your doing with the welding hood down...

The pans rust from the outside . The problem is the thin metal used in making the pans . The manufacturers try and save money where ever they can , and thiner sheet steel is one area ( remember when you could sit on the hood of your car /truck and not dent it ? ) they do this . This is more of a problem where salt is used on the roads in the winter . The pan on my '96 still looks almost new but has spent it's life in Florida , but the pan on my '86 that spent all but the last two years I owned it in Michigan looked pretty bad and I looked for leaks every time I changed the oil .
