whistling/howling '03
I have an '03 Explorer XLT. Still under warranty. The past month or so when I first start her up in EXTREME cold weather I hear a very loud whistling/howling, and it sounds like its coming from the tranny, but am not certain. I plan to take it to the dealer very soon, just wondered if anyone else has this problem? I wanna have a jump on the dealership.

Hi, I am having the exact same problem with my 02 SportTrac. A high pitched whistle or howl until it warms up. Mine does it worst about 3,000 rpm and seems to be most pronounced in overdrive. I agree that it sounds like the tranny. The problem is, as stated, it only does it when the temp falls to 20* or colder and the noise goes away after the truck warms up so it will be a hard thing for the dealer to find and fix. I am thinking about putting it on jack stands tomorrow morning and going under it to see if I can verify where the noise is coming from. Please let us know what your dealer finds. I still have about 1,500 miles of warrenty left and I would like to get this fixed.

It turned out to be a bearing in the alternator. My dealer replaced it (the alternator) last week and the noise has vanished. Now it goes in on Monday to get the valve body in the transmission repaired.
