Blue smoke and stong odor out of exhuast
Hello All,
I have a 2002 F-350 7.3 powerstroke truck with 31k miles. About a year ago, my truck started to smoke on cold mornings when outside temp is below 40 deg. After the truck warms up, the moke goes away "10 Minutes" but I get an exsesive strong diesel smell almost like its dumping raw fuel out the exhuast. I know it's a diesel and it will smell but this makes your eyes tear up it's so strong.
The dealer said blue smoke is normal for cold mornings but it never did it before so that's why I know there's some sort of problem. I have a friend with simular 7.3 and their trucks don't smoke.
Any help on this would be greatly appretiated.

Hello cedo, and welcome to FTE!! let me see if i can help you out.... First off...are you running a stock truck, as in no chip or performance mods?? And also are you positive that it is blue smoke?? white smoke is mormal on a cold say, but blue means that you are burning oil. If it's still under any warrenty, bring it in and tell then that it's burning oil.... show them that it is blue smoke and not white..... Hope this helps!!

Like Robbgt said, white smoke, normal when cold, means incomplete combustion, after awhile a little bluish smoke is normal, means burning oil, a cold motor will have more clearance in the cylinder walls UNTIL you work it, then they will heat up and seal better, resulting in less oil being burned. It could also mean bad injector o-rings.
Next time you do a fuel filter look at your filter, a good sign that injector o-rings are bad is a black, gooy fuel filter. Mine will make a huge blue cloud of smoke all day if I let it idle, but as soon as I drive it, it goes away. A diesel will not warm up until you work them, have seen it on my own pyrometer, let it idle for half an hour (I know guys bad me, wet stacking I burned it out though) and the pyrometer was still at 200* when I got in it. If it is still smoking after a few miles of drivng, prolly injector o-rings, there cheap, easy, and a do it yourselfer.
